We have entered April 2026, and Netflix India has already become a battlefield for survival. Right now, we have two movies dominating the platform’s Top 10 movie charts in the country, and they have more in common than just amazing performances and high stakes.
The #1 spot is held by the Hindi survival thriller Tu Yaa Main (led by Adarsh Gourav and Shanaya Kapoor), closely followed by the Hollywood shark flick Thrash (starring Djimon Hounsou) at #2.
If you’ve noticed a pattern in your “Trending Now” section, you aren’t imagining it: India is currently obsessed with “creature features” where the ocean (or a very deep pool) wants you dead.
Tu Yaa Main serves as the remake of the Thai original, The Pool. A rapper and an influencer find themselves trapped at the bottom of a very deep, abandoned swimming pool with no ladder and no way out. As if being trapped isn’t enough, a stray crocodile enters the pool. It’s a claustrophobic nightmare where the characters have to use their wits to stay out of the reptile’s jaws.
On the other hand, Thrash emerges as a Netflix “shark” original flick. A massive Category 5 hurricane floods a coastal town. While the residents try to survive the rising waters, they realise the storm has brought hungry bull sharks right into their living rooms.
It’s rare to see two movies with such similar animal vs. human themes sitting at the top of the charts simultaneously. One factor responsible for this scenario could be the audience’s love of survival/animal or monster thrillers. We have grown up watching Jaws and Jurassic Park. Which is why movies like Thrash and Tu Yaa Main generally excite viewers with their execution of thrill, blood, gore, suspense, and fear.
Plus, they are lean, mean, and designed to keep your heart racing from the moment the creature appears.
There is something universally terrifying about being in water with a predator you can’t see. Both films play on the fear of being “prey” in an environment where humans are naturally weak.
If you want a psychological, character-driven struggle with a gritty Indian setting, go for Tu Yaa Main. Adarsh Gourav’s performance adds an emotional depth you don’t usually see in horror.
If you want high-octane disaster action and terrifying and brutal shark attacks, Thrash is your best bet on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
