Politics plays a big role in the lives of many of us. The ideologies and people become too important part of our thinking process. Before we realise it, they already start to influence our decision-making. The same is happening in the USA. The environment is politically charged as the election is approaching. The fight is between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris and both of them have extremists among their supporters.
Now, Netflix is paying the price of this.
Netflix is going through a sharp increase in cancellations after its co-founder, Reed Hastings, made a $7 million donation to Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. Reports show that from July 25 to July 29, Netflix’s average daily cancellations were around 2.7X compared to the previous two weeks.
The spike occurred immediately after Hastings publicly endorsed Harris on the social media platform X, and of course, his large donation was food for the media.
Hastings, a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party, has made similar political donations in the past, including raising over $100,000 for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign. This time the reaction was swift, as many Donald Trump supporters urged others to cancel their Netflix subscriptions. Some even shared proof of their cancellations online using the hashtag #CancelNetflix.
So this cancel culture became a sort of online trend. Even those supporters who would not have cancelled subscriptions cancelled it due to FOMO. You see, American voters are sort of blinded because Reed Hastings is not even a part of Netflix now. Yes, he co-founded it but he is not in the game now.
On July 26, three days after the donation news broke, Netflix recorded its worst day of cancellations this year. Despite this, the company remains the largest streaming service in the world, with 277 million subscribers.
The company is expected to report its financial results in mid-October. Let’s see what happens then.
