One of the most fascinating trends to emerge in the last 3–4 years, thanks to OTT, is that theatrical failures are getting a second chance and re-emerging as streaming champions. The current Netflix India Top 10 movies list is a testament to this shift. According to FlixPatrol, Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar 2 ranks #1, while Dhadak 2 has secured the second spot.
Further down, at number four, is the Malayalam film Odum Kuthira Chaadum Kuthira, which performed poorly at the box office and received lacklustre reviews. But it found success on Netflix thanks to Fahadh Faasil’s star power. Fafa is a big name, especially on the platform. His last project, Maareesan, also became a major streaming success. Whereas, Mahavatar Narsimha ranks #3.
These days, one of the key deterrents for Indian audiences is the cost and time commitment of a movie ticket, unless it’s a big event film. On top of that, online criticism or weak word-of-mouth instantly discourages audiences from spending the effort and money to visit a theatre.
This is where OTT services like Netflix step in, sparing viewers the hassle. They create a low-stakes environment that allows audiences to watch content at their own pace.
Interestingly, Dhadak 2 has received a more positive response on OTT compared to Son of Sardaar 2, especially in terms of story quality and performances. There’s no denying that Dhadak 2 was mis-marketed as a purely romantic film. The makers should have also highlighted its social commentary in their promotions. But thanks to Netflix, audiences are now appreciating this sequel from the comfort of their homes.
This trend also underscores the evolving economics of Indian cinema. Filmmakers are increasingly securing lucrative OTT acquisition deals before theatrical release, effectively creating a financial safety net.
