Here is some good news for people who are against censorship in movies and shows. The Supreme Court has dismissed the plea for a central regulatory board for OTT in India.
A public interest litigation was filed in September with the claims that the OTT platforms function without any central guideline and without any checks. The Netflix series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ was the show that sparked a new controversy and audiences complained that Netflix is time and again distorting historical facts for popularity. The need for a central regulatory board was once more emphasised and the PIL was made.
An autonomous body, ‘Central Board for Regulation and Monitoring of Online Video Contents’ was appealed for and a secretary-level IAS officer was to lead the team. But many were disconcerted with the idea that censorship will now corrupt the free storytelling attitude of OTT like it had done with theaters.
It is good that no such board is being created and the creative liberty of OTT storytellers remain the same, but they should take some responsibility over the matter and not involve in atrocious distorting of facts. India is a country where new controversies are brewed everyday and OTT platforms must take care of what they are doing with their liberty.
