Reliance Industries has decided to retain Disney+ Hotstar as the sole streaming platform, post merger of Star India and Viacom 18, as per reports. This will mean merger of Jio Cinema into Disney+ Hotstar.
This decision wasn’t taken without considering other possibilities like merging Disney+ Hotstar into Jio Cinema or running two separate platforms for sports and entertainment. But according to reports, the final decision to make Disney+ Hotstar as the primary platform was taken due to its superior technological infrastructure.
This will mean that all live sporting events, for the merged entity will now stream on Disney+ Hotstar, including Indian Premier League whose rights are with Jio Cinema. Also, the HBO contents will be back on Disney+ Hotstar.
In February this year, Reliance Industries and Walt Disney made a pact to integrate Star India and Viacom 18 resulting in an $8.5 billion merger deal between the two. The resultant entity will be a media powerhouse with control over 100 channels and two streaming platforms.
