Netflix vs Blockbuster, Netflix vs HBO, Netflix vs Disney are popular but there is another rivalry that is very strong. Netflix vs AMC.
AMC, a theatre chain, have set aside their long-running rivalry for one goal: to make money together. Their collaboration centres on the re-release of KPop Demon Hunters, a film that dominated Netflix like anything. It became extremely popular on the platform and even surpassed Squid Game Season 1 in terms of views.
This time, it’s returning as a sing-along version, giving fans another chance to enjoy it on the big screen. The movie will play in about 400 AMC theaters across the U.S. and Europe over the Halloween weekend.
This partnership marks a surprising turn for two companies that have been at odds for years. In the past, their disagreements kept major Netflix films, such as Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, from having wide theatrical releases. But now, both sides seem open to exploring what they call “mutually beneficial opportunities.” While no one is promising that Netflix films will suddenly get the traditional 90-day theatrical window, this truce offers a small but hopeful sign.
For audiences, it means more chances to see Netflix films where they truly shine i.e. on the big screen.
This collaboration stands out because a great number of people have already seen the movie. It is in fact the most watched title ever on Netflix. Despite that, AMC is betting it on the big screens. We get it, 400 screens is not a big deal even in India but this step itself is remarkable. Let’s see if we get more such movies on the big screens.
