Netflix has officially landed the rights to Eloise, a live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s book series about a mischievous girl living in New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel.
The project, which has been in development since 2020, is being directed and written by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creative force behind Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
The film will star newcomer Mae Schenk in the titular role, while Ryan Reynolds joins the cast as an original villainous character created specifically for the movie.
Reynolds is also producing the film through his company, Maximum Effort, alongside MRC and Handmade Films.
Netflix describes Eloise as a “wholly original adventure” inspired by the timeless books written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight. The story promises to capture the playful chaos and wit that made Eloise a generational favorite, while reintroducing her for modern audiences.
Hannah Minghella, Netflix’s head of feature animation and family films, said the goal is to “reintroduce this cherished character to the world” with the combined charm of Sherman-Palladino’s storytelling and Reynolds’ signature humor.
Eloise has a long screen legacy, from Disney’s 2003 TV movies Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime to the 2006 animated series Me, Eloise! on Starz Kids and Family.
Production is set to begin in November, with MRC overseeing the film in collaboration with the Thompson estate and Simon & Schuster.
With Reynolds’ involvement and Sherman-Palladino’s creative direction, Netflix’s Eloise could mark the return of a timeless character, this time with a modern twist and global reach.
