Since September 2023, Netflix India has been greatly enjoying its long-term partnership with Yash Raj Films (YRF). Not only was this deal considered a seismic shift in the Indian OTT landscape at the time, but it was also a calculated masterstroke by both parties that couldn’t have arrived at a better time for either of them. As a result, Netflix India got some prominent shows in the form of The Romantics, The Railway Men, and the newly released Mandala Murders.
Now that it has been announced that Netflix is the official streaming partner for the blockbuster Saiyaara and the soon-to-be blockbuster War 2, it seems the next 2–4 months will be highly beneficial for the streamer in terms of viewership.
Earlier, YRF had a similar deal with Prime Video. But now that Prime Video and YRF are no longer partnering, Netflix may serve as a boon in disguise for the popular production house, especially as a growing number of Indian viewers are feeling a sense of disenchantment and frustration with Prime Video.
Since entering the Indian OTT market, Prime Video had remained a well-liked platform, until it announced new subscription packs filled with ads and extra charges for ad removal.
This strategy from Prime Video, a move to boost revenue, has been met with a largely negative reception from Indian users who had chosen the platform specifically for an ad-free experience. While the platform has tried to soften the blow with a dual model, ad-supported and premium ad-free tiers, the feeling of being shortchanged has created a window of opportunity for competitors like Netflix India.
Enter Netflix: a platform that, while not without its own challenges, is aggressively pursuing the Indian market. While it has invested in local content, it has lacked the one thing that can draw a truly mass-market audience, a consistent pipeline of big-ticket, post-theatrical Hindi blockbusters. This is where the YRF deal changes everything.
YRF is not just a production house; it’s a legacy brand synonymous with cinematic spectacle. From high-octane action-packed thrillers to heartwarming romances, a YRF film carries an inherent promise of quality and scale. This partnership all but guarantees massive viewership numbers for Netflix.
With the streaming rights for films like the record-breaking Saiyaara and the newly released War 2, Netflix is now armed with the kind of marquee content that can drive new subscriptions and lure substantial viewership.
The timing is impeccable. Saiyaara, confirmed to arrive on Netflix on September 12, and War 2, expected to stream around October, are coming off massive theatrical runs. This influx of fresh, high-demand content provides a direct and compelling reason for subscribers to choose Netflix over its rivals. In other words, Netflix is set to enjoy record viewership numbers in the upcoming months. Stay tuned for more updates.
