Should Indian OTT Adapt the Australian SVOD Model On Sports?

SVOD stands for subscription video on demand and through this business model, customers can pay a service provider a subscription fee to access streaming content. TV series, films, live events, and other types of material are usually available on SVOD services. Indian SVOD market is booming at the moment with platforms like Hotstar, Prime Video, etc. In the upcoming years, the market aims to grow even bigger with new and improved streaming services.

Amid the booming SVOD market, Australia has proven how good and effective sports can be to excel in this market. According to recent statistics from Ampere Analysis, Australian SVOD spending on sports is unusually high, with multiple local streaming services holding exclusive sports rights and multiple overseas streamers making investments in the genre.

Various foreign tournaments have their rights bought by local Australian SVODs. The Six Nations, the Europa League, the Conference League, and the UEFA Champions League are all televised by Stan Sport. The Women’s Super League, J League, and Premier League rights belong to Optus Sport.

Not just regional Australian services are spending money on sports programming. A-League soccer will air on Paramount+ until 2026; Matchroom Boxing matches will air on DAZN until 2026; and NFL Game Pass International will air on NFL Network until 2033. Amazon Prime Video will stream the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Given the craze of various sporting events in Soccer, Boxing, and other premiere sports, this growth will be hard to stop or slow down in the upcoming time. It is high time that Indian streaming services should also up their game in sports broadcasting and live streaming. Cricket and Football might be the potential targets for which the SVOD market will see a huge rise in the Indian market.

Analyzing the current status of Indian OTTs, streaming platforms have to revolutionize their plans and features improving the SVOD experience for users. India’s fast digital revolution has been a crucial motivator for the rise of OTT platforms. As we enter a new era of technology, this surge will undoubtedly increase quickly.
