While other OTT platforms in India were actively operating in September 2025, SonyLIV shockingly remained quiet throughout the month. In August this year, the streamer delivered plenty of gripping and entertaining original shows, such as Mayasabha, The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang, and Court Kacheri.
However, last month, the platform didn’t release a single original series. We did get 13th: Some Lessons Aren’t Taught in Classrooms around the corner of September, but it eventually premiered on October 1st.
We also saw the release of the second season of Million Dollar Listing India, which, unfortunately, didn’t prove to be as compelling as its debut season. It seems like SonyLIV spent the entire month of September building anticipation for 13th while also aiming to extend the viewership window for Million Dollar Listing India and the Asia Cup 2025.
Speaking of the Asia Cup 2025, there’s no denying that, despite the lack of original releases, September turned out to be a highly profitable month for the platform in terms of viewership. The tournament successfully drew a massive portion of Indian cricket fans. However, SonyLIV’s overall performance while broadcasting the event was abysmal.
The platform faced the wrath of cricket lovers for its poor video and audio quality, technical glitches, increased ad frequency and duration, weak commentary, and several other issues, all of which spoiled the excitement and enjoyment of this prestigious tournament for many viewers.
SonyLIV’s overall content strategy seemed miscalculated in September 2025. It won the war for viewership numbers thanks to the Asia Cup, but lost the battle for viewer satisfaction. In a market where subscriber loyalty hinges on both exclusive content and an immersive viewing experience, technical hiccups and intrusive ads are a fast track to churn.
As SonyLIV moves into October with new releases, its biggest challenge isn’t just attracting viewers to upcoming original shows, but also restoring faith in the app itself. The platform’s success going forward will depend on whether its technical team can deliver a major comeback to match the popularity of its biggest events and most anticipated shows.
