KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s biggest movie ever, with more than 236 million views since its release in June. The animated musical has now passed Red Notice to take the top spot on the platform’s all-time list.
The film tells the story of Huntr/x, a fictional K-pop girl group who use both their music and fighting skills to battle demons and protect humans. It was first shown with little fanfare at Netflix’s Tudum theatre in Los Angeles, but quickly grew into a global hit thanks to social media buzz, viral memes, and word of mouth.
Viewers have praised the movie’s bright, stylish animation and its mix of traditional and modern Korean culture. But the biggest draw has been its catchy K-pop soundtrack. Some of the songs were created by well-known producers who have worked with groups like BTS and Twice. The track Golden even reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, while several others hit the top 10 on Spotify’s global chart.
The film’s popularity has been so strong that Netflix released a sing-along version in cinemas, which went on to become its first number one film at the US box office. A worldwide sing-along version is now streaming on Netflix.
Both Huntr/x and their rivals in the movie, Saja Boys, have broken Spotify records, even surpassing BTS and Blackpink in US chart history. The soundtrack also made history on the Billboard Hot 100 with four songs in the top 10 at once.
Talks about a sequel are already underway.
