Cybercrime is on the rise, and experts are sounding the alarm about a new scam targeting Netflix users.
You must have read in the news that these cybercrimes, mostly from Pakistani numbers are so dangerous that it is killing people quite literally. So it is extremely important to be aware of them.
A new cybercrime is now targeting Netflix users.
According to cybersecurity firm Bitdefender, scammers are exploiting the subscription renewal process to steal personal and financial information. With cybercriminals using AI, scams are becoming more sophisticated and widespread.
Scammers are sending phishing messages disguised as Netflix subscription renewal alerts. These messages often look convincing and also feature Netflix branding and are written in local languages to appear authentic. Some even include minor grammatical errors but are still clear enough to fool unsuspecting users.
The scam works like this: you receive a message claiming there’s an issue with your payment. It urges you to click on a link to “renew your subscription.” Once you click, you’re redirected to a fake website mimicking Netflix’s login page. Here, cybercriminals collect sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, personal details, and credit card data.
What happens next?
Stolen information is sold on the dark web which puts victims at risk of financial fraud, identity theft, and even scams like money laundering. Bitdefender reports that this scam has affected Netflix users in 23 countries, including India.
So to sum up,
Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited messages.
Be cautious of messages that create urgency, like “Pay now!” or “Last chance to save your account.”
Look for red flags such as unprofessional language or unknown sender IDs.
