Zee5 tried to attempt for greats this October but unfortunately nothing worked out well for the platform. Whether it was the originals or licensed content, Zee5 could not strike a chord with the audience.
The month began with the premiere of Zee5 original film ‘The Signature’ starring Anupam Kher and helmed by National Award winning filmmaker Gajendra Ahire who is mostly known for his works in Marathi film industry. The film was based on a very emotional concept and it relied completely on Anupam Kher who carried it on his shoulders alone playing the role of a helpless husband trying to save his wife. The film tries to raise some tough questions about your moral compass but it could not impress the viewers much due its outdated treatment and several unnecessary cinematic libertines.
On the same day came ‘Colourrs of Love’ which did not create any wave. It was followed by John Abraham and Sharvari led Hindi action drama ‘Vedaa’ which hoped to redeem itself on OTT after an underwhelming box office run. Though these hopes were not met in entirety and it only managed to get a lukewarm response on Zee5.
Zee5 fell silent for rest of the month only to launch Marathi film ‘Dharamveer 2’, Hindi film ‘Aye Zindagi’ and Tamil/ Telugu series ‘Aindham Vedham’ during the last week of October.
As for ‘Dharamveer 2’, a sequel of the hit 2022 film ‘Dharamveer’, the film’s theatrical run was good but the film wasn’t received that heartwarmingly on OTT. Something similar can be said for ‘Aye Zindagi’ which is a critically acclaimed film but that did not translate into viewing numbers on Zee5.
As for the Zee5 original series ‘Aindham Vedham’, there were high expectations from this mystical thriller drama but it disappointed. Created by Naga, it was ridiculously stale and dated with amateurish performances.
Overall, Zee5 did try to deliver a diversified slate this month with a mix of original and licensed content across genres and languages and though the attempt is praiseworthy, it ranks low on the points table due to unimpressive content quality.
