The filmmaker and screenwriter Gabriela David, 50 years old, author of the film “The Fly in the Ashes”, released last March, died on 4/11 in the morning due to an illness that had afflicted her for 16 years. She was born in Mar del Plata on September 21, 1960, and was the daughter of the director Mario David.

In her youth, Gabriela David studied sculpture and drawing, and she had Antonio Pujía, among other teachers. She graduated in 1980 from the Manuel Belgrano National School of Fine Arts, acquiring her cinematographic training in 1978, as an assistant director in feature films and advertising spots directed by her father. From 1981 to 1984 she collaborated as a colorist and background director at Jorge Martín Catú’s animation film production company. Since 1993 she worked as a professor of the Expression Workshop Chair II, in the Communication Sciences Major, at the UBA.

As director, screenwriter and producer, she made several short films, including “Tren gaucho” (1988), based on a story of the same name by Juan José Manauta, in which she told how a teenager who collects waste in a garbage dump left for a day. the world of marginality and helplessness in which he found himself, when he participated during some village carnivals of a murga. For this short film he received eight national and international awards, including in 1989, the Carabela de Plata for best Ibero-American short film at the 31st. Bilbao International Film Festival, Spain.

With “Taxi, an encounter” he debuted as a feature film director and won 11 awards, including the Silver Apple for best director at the NYC Latin American Cinema Festival, the Découverte de la Critique Française award at the Toulouse Festival, and the La Sudestada award for best script at the 4th La Sudestada Exhibition at the Cervantes Institute in Paris.

With “The Fly in the Ashes” he obtained laurels at the international film festivals of Huelva, Kerala and Innsbruck and on October 20 he received from the Legislature of the Autonomous City of the City of Buenos Aires the declaration of “Social Interest” for the film starring Luis Machín, Luciano Cáceres, Cecilia Rossetto, Paloma Contreras, Vera Carnevale and Dalma Maradona.
