Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu Review – A Fluffy, Bland Sexual Awakening Tale
BOTTOM LINE: A Fluffy, Bland Sexual Awakening Tale

What Is the Story About?

Pavithra’s mom wants her to be a classical singer besides studying. She wants her to continue the family legacy. However, Pavithra (Akshara Haasan) has something else in her mind. The daily routine makes her life boring. What happens when she decides to go bold and have sex with her boyfriend is the movie’s basic plot.

Performances?

Akshara Haasan perfectly suits the part of a young innocent looking girl who wants to break free. She offers a perfect mixture for a coming of age setting. It does look like she is trying a bit too hard to be soft at times, but otherwise, she gets the cute undertones well. It is a simple part that is done with confidence.

Analysis

Raja Ramamurthy directs Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu. It is a basic tale of the coming of age of a young girl via a sexual awakening.

The run time of the movie is pretty short, but the screenplay makes it seem lengthier than it is. Raja Ramamurthy takes time in establishing the daily routine and the world. The idea is to convey the boredom and shackles created for the girl, but it’s not just her that feels that way. The viewer too suffers the same fate.

The movie gets going slowly when the conversation regarding sex is brought up by the girls. The pros and cons from the societal perspective are neatly presented. However, there is nothing new in it.

The final act involves the girl growing in confidence and coming of age after she has the experience. The whole thing feels rushed and the message it wants to convey isn’t properly presented. In fact, it could be misunderstood which is much worse in this case.

While having or not having sex is the choice of an individual is a right point, the way the narrative proceedings showcase the remarkable turnaround in the character sends out a wrong indication.

There are a few engaging moments in between like the one in the supermarket or the one at night around the house. They offer some genuine lighthearted fun and drama at the same time. But, such moments are far less. Given the relatable theme and the many confusions of a young girl, the whole thing comes across as too simple and fluffy.

The ending is on a predictable note. One can see it coming from the start itself. To then sit through that length is a tough job.

Overall, Achcham Madam Naanam Payirppu has a wafer-thin plot and it rests on subtle performances and relatability to take us through. Sadly, it doesn’t happen despite some lighthearted stuff.

Other Artists?

The world is populated with identifiable but cliched characters. Malgudi Subha, Usha Uthup, Suresh Chandra Menon etc have no depth to their roles. They play familiar characters with cardboard quality. Anjana Jayaprakash and Shalini Vijaykumar are better, but only marginally. George Maryan is okay. The rest of the characters have some individual quirks but aren’t explored properly.

Music and Other Departments?

Susha provides passable music. The background score adds to the blandness despite some decent moments. Shreya Dev Dubey’s cinematography gives a short film vibe to the movie. It is alright at best in a few parts getting the feel of a small locality. Had Keerthana Murali’s editing been sharper the length wouldn’t have been more than an hour? The writing is par for the course. There is nothing new on offer anywhere.
