What Is the Story About?
Bad Cop follows a fierce cop Karan and his twin brother Arjun, a small-time petty thief as they get embroiled in Kazbe’s(a big-wig mafia don) illegal Ivory trafficking business.
While Karan and Arjun’s fates intertwine and Karan dies, will Arjun be able to avenge his brother’s murder?
Performances?
Gulshan Devaiah delivers a very interesting performance as this starry, fierce cop Karan and petty criminal Arjun – two sides of a coin. The switch-on-off play of Arjun as Karan would be one of the upcoming highlights of the show. Anurag Kashyap gets the treatment of a typical filmy antagonist and he does sell it the way it is. The actor hasn’t gotten enough screen-space in the show yet, but evidently the duo would make for a watchable cat and mouse chase. Harleen Sethi gets a meaty character as Karan’s wife and superior at work. Her dynamics with Karan and Arjun (who has to guise as Karan) is going to be interesting.
Analysis
Written by Renzil D’silva & team and directed by Aditya Datt, Bad Cop is a cat and mouse crime thriller that follows a fierce cop, his twin brother and a mafia don whose fates and families intertwine putting a lot at stake. Bad Cop begins with Arjun and his crime-partner engaged in small time extortion in a luxury hotel. While they try to escape, they witness a murder and un-intentionally drop evidences suggesting their involvement in the murder. The screen cuts to Karan, a cop who is questioning a criminal in the police station. The show moves to predictable directions as identical twins Karan and Arjun get shot in an encounter-like situation by Kazbe’s gangs. Their fates get toppled and Karan dies in the process. Arjun, now mistaken as Karan has to fend for himself, the murder he’s been falsely accused for and also avenge his brother’s murder by Kazbe’s gangs. Bad Cop is as filmy as it gets. There’s an honest cop, his equation with his wife who also happens to be his senior at work is cracked, his loved brother is a petty criminal and he has a big underworld mafia after him. And then he dies. Now his identical twin has to play the good cop bad cop to uncover secrets and lies. But, the problem lies in how generic the show’s execution is. There’s minimum effort from the writing department to make it gripping and has it all dumped on Gulshan Devaiah and Anurag Kashyap to make it work. And expectedly they do a lot of heavy lifting themselves. The action is cool too. What could have been an intriguing fast paced racy crime thriller is reduced to a low-budget crime drama. Add to it, the screenplay makes it all predictable from the word go. In short, Bad Cop begins on a banal note despite good casting choices and some interesting action sequences.
Music and Other Departments?
One of the strongest suit is its action choreography. In the first two episodes one could see some real cool patches of stunt-work and there could be more in upcoming episodes. Vikram Montrose and Tallz’ music and Anik Ram Verma’s cinematography however doesn’t help the show much as they look and sound quite banal.
Highlights?
– Gulshan Devaiah & Anurag Kashyap
– Stunt Choreography
Drawbacks?
– Predictability
– Bland execution
Did I Enjoy It?
Yes, but in very few parts.
Will You Recommend It?
Yes, but with huge reservations.
