What Is the Story About?
This is based on the story of jailer Sunil Gupta, who served as a jailer in the famous Tihar jail. He documented his experience in a book called Black Warrant. After nearly four and a half years of the announcement, the series has finally come up, and the wait was worth it. The story focuses on not just Sunil but everyone of importance who was surrounded by him. It includes some top guns in the police service and also some infamous criminals like Charles Shobraj and Billa Ranga.
Performances?
Vikramaditya Motwane has a strange but great habit. He usually takes actors who are not very popular at any specific time and makes them do wonders. Black Warrant is one such series. We realise that Zahan Kapoor comes from THE KAPOOR FAMILY, but let’s be honest, hardly anyone knows him.
He debuted with Hansal Mehta’s Faraaz, and we can already see a massive change. He is just incredible in his role as a jailer. He has done really fantastic work, and he must receive all the praise for it. The best thing about his performance has to be the manner in which he carries a spectrum of emotions like vulnerability, innocence, discomfort, and sense of duty.
Not only him, the other actors around him are also amazing. Rahul Bhatt and Anurag Thakur did an amazing job of carrying the intense situations on their shoulders.
Even the cameos are a charm. Sidhant Gupta as the Bikini Killer brings a lot of charm (however problematic that may sound) to the show. His accent with a French touch gets a little weird but is worth watching.
Analysis
If any word aptly describes the entire show, then that has to be “honest.” It is a massive boost to the show, as Motwane’s honesty pulled the show to greatness. However, it becomes a little problematic for the narrative of the show.
So, two things could happen. One is victimisation of the inmates. The prisoners are victims of the system and cruel jailers. Another could be an authoritarian police offer against the evil prisoners. But it takes the third route. It is just too objective. It doesn’t take any stand. It is just a change of very powerful frames, but the series takes no stand.
The overall narrative comes out to be very very powerful otherwise and the distance Zahan shows as a character from the entire system is something that catches your attention.
Music and Other Departments?
Honestly, there is not a lot of role for music in this drama. But the background score by Ajay Jayanti grabs your attention in the scenes where a character is going through some sort of transformation. The editing, just like all projects of Motwane, is flawless.
The dialogues, however, are a little tricky. They are raw and realistic. They are not stylised and there is no dialogue that sticks with you after the show is over. In a drama, you do need some dramatic dialogue, which Black Warrant doesn’t provide you with.
