What Is the Story About?
Abhi (Likith Shetty) is a depressed guy. His family is in shambles and his love is close to his cousin. Unable to bear all the torture, Abhi decides to commit suicide.
However, a twist in Abhi’s life occurs at that point and it changes him forever. Abhi is confident and ready to face all challenges. Who brought the change and how their relationship takes an unexpected turn is the movie’s overall plot.
Performances?
Likith Shetty as Abhi has an apt role for his personality. It offers dual shades and he pulls it off easily. There is nothing highly dramatic or emotional work for him here. It is a lightweight part that is done superficially.
Analysis
Arjun Kumar S directs Family Pack. It is a simple love story with a quirky family drama thrown in high doses.
Right from the start, there is a whimsical, over the top tone with the narrative. It either sticks or doesn’t there is no middle ground. If it’s the former case, there are some engaging moments in the narrative with a decent end. If it’s the latter there is hardly anything engaging with an okay end.
The equation of the hero with his family (father and mother) and with the family of his love is the movie’s mainstay. There is a small twist here that brings the main conflict in the narrative. It is related to the ghost angle and it’s well done.
The problem, as mentioned previously, lies in the execution. One fails to take anything seriously. It takes away the dramatic stacked the narrative could have had. One is never invested with any of the characters or their plight.
After a point in the second half, the whole narrative seems pointless and needlessly stretched. The lack of emotional connection, pretentious, loud action and extended length kill any little interest one might have.
And yet despite the issues, there is a core issue related to the ‘expectations versus differences’ in a family drama that has a relatable emotion. It helps in the proceedings teaching a decent end.
The mythological connection is a good thought, but the way it’s executed and used as part of the narrative generates mixed emotions.
Overall, Family Pack has a reasonably good premise with quirky characters and twists, but the nonsensical execution kills all the scope for fun and drama. If you like to see something over the top and whacky fun (with mixed results) give the Family Pack a try, otherwise stay away.
Other Artists?
Sharmita Gowda playing the female lead is alright. Considering the overaction all around, she comes across as relatively grounded. And this is despite playing a hyperactive character. Amrutha Iyengar is probably the only actor acting normally.
There is a big supporting cast in the Family Pack. Each has a decent role but the best one belongs to Rangayana Raghu. His flashback doesn’t work, but he is fine in the current setup. The exaggerated emotions go well with the overall tone. The same is the case with Sihi Kahi Chandru, who overacts like there is no tomorrow.
Music and Other Departments?
Gurukiran‘s music is alright and goes well with the tone of the narrative. It segues well with the proceedings. Shreesha Kuduvalli and Uday Leela handle cinematography. It is below par and gives the movie a short film vibe in parts. Deepu S Kumar’s editing too is a mixed bag. The writing has mojo and is fun in parts, but doesn’t impress as a whole.
