What Is the Story About?
The lives of three women are shaken when the fourth gang member, Ishi (Juhi Chawla), commits suicide. It happens a day after; the four were involved in a tussle and a murder.
An ambitious young female cop, Geetha, starts investigating the case. Did she find out the truth? Or did the three friends solve the mystery of Ishi’s death? The series’ core plot involves a compelling drama revolving around death.
Performances?
Juhi Chawla, Soha Ali Khan, Shahana Goswami, and Kritika Kamra play the four women leads of sorts in the series. Each has a well-defined part making them easily relatable. It helps them in coming up with compelling acts each.
There were lots of expectations on Juhi Chawla’s part. She has done well, but considering the scope, one feels underwhelming. Big emotional moments and a little aggression and fear drive her act. She adequately covers those and, as usual, brightens up the screens in lighter moments, which admittedly are few only.
Soha Ali Khan, also on a comeback, gets a substantial role. She has an opinion on everything and is quite vocal. It initially leads to overaction, but Soha Ali Khan settles down eventually. She is acceptable in the latter half of the series.
Shahana Goswami comes up with another intense act. She also has an aggressive streak which is conveyed neatly. At times, it does look a little one-dimensional and irritating, though.
Kritika Kamra plays an emotional role, constantly under some sort of burden or pressure. A caged bird, as the character intro title card, reveals. It is a character that seems to be still in development and works only intermittently despite a genuine effort by the actress.
Analysis
Tanuja Chandra, Kopal Naithani, and Ashish Pandey direct Hush Hush. Tanuja Chandra, a senior director, does the major work, though.
Hush Hush has an interesting thriller premise involving death. The plot is to find out who is behind it or what circumstances led to it. The setting involving high society individuals with rich backgrounds further adds to the intrigue.
The series can be divided into two segments. The first one involves the drama around the mystery and in-between the characters. The second one is the actual suspense or the core plot revealing the reason for the death. Among the two, it is the first one involving drama which holds the attention.
The first segment primarily consists of episodes until the middle of the series. From then onwards, we get to the revelations. Here, the show loses momentum and gets a little bit distracted. It is done to set up the next series’s next instalment.
The performance of the different female leads and the compelling drama they conjure up is the mainstay of Hush Hush. As most of it happens ‘before’ the key revelations, there are enough moments to hold the attention.
However, once the reason is out, things start to drag. The investigation, too, has a similar feel. The roadblocks are created only to lead to a second season.
Overall, Hush Hush has an exciting premise and compelling performance. However, it fails to sustain the initial momentum until the end and falters after the mid-point. If you like thriller cum drama narratives, give Hush Hush a try, even though it is a passable affair at best.
Other Artists?
The entire series consists of many female artists who chip in engaging performances. Among the many, Karishma Tanna and Ayesha Jhulka easily stand out. Both have done a commendable job and elevated the mostly all-female cast. Chaitanya Choudhry initially has nothing much to do but gets a few good moments during the series’s latter half.
Music and Other Departments?
Arijit Dutta’s music goes well with the mood of the narrative. It starts with the title sequence itself, which is well done. Shaz Mohammed’s cinematography gives a dark and bleak tone to the proceedings. The visual palette is perfect for an intriguing mystery thriller. Chandan Arora’s editing is fine but gets messy towards the end. The writing is good throughout.
