What Is the Story About?
Queen of Tears follows a 3 year old couple – Hong Hae-in – the third generation Queens group chaebol and heiress and Baek Hyun-woo, a lawyer from humble background, their crumbling marriage and miraculous rebirth of love between the duo. The Kdrama follows the couple 3 years post their fairy-tale marriage and how things change for the now distant couple when a shocking news hit them.
Performances?
Kim Soo Hyun‘s star-studded return to Kdrama after his critically raved performances in ‘Its okay to not be okay’ and ‘One Ordinary Day’ is all worth the hype. Considering the acting metal his role is carrying even in the pilot episode, it’s pretty sure that the actor is set to go all guns blazing moving forward. He nails the naive, soft-hearted, funny and cute Baek Hyun-woo effortlessly.
Kim Jee Won‘s super-rich Chaebol princess Hong Hae-in is however the MVP of the pilot episode. She carries the attitude of an ultra-rich brat and her style statement is the cherry on the cake. She gives the required angst and her chemistry with Soo Hyun is so dreamy.
Analysis
Created and written by Park Ji-eun after the blockbuster Crash Landing On You (2019), Queen of Tears is undeniably the most awaited Kdrama of the year. The show boasts of a star-studded casting led by Kim Soo Hyun (It’s Okay to be not Okay, My Love from the Star) and Kim Ji Won (Heirs, Descendants of the Sun, My Liberation Notes) as a lawyer married to the heiress of a rich conglomerate family.
Queen of Tears has everything that a Kdrama fanatic would helplessly drool over. Two Irresistibly charming leads with off-the charts chemistry and their angsty love-story amidst starkly different upbringings and backgrounds, like what more would you need? But here’s the catch! The show begins with the two leads already in a troubled paradise, lamenting over their patchy married life.
Hong Hae-in is the president of the Queens Department store and a young heir to the filthy rich family. She is married to Baek Hyun-woo, a lawyer with a modest upbringing. The pilot episode of Queen of Tears has the duo giving interviews to media, 3 years after their sensational wedding about how perfect is their sham of a marriage, how beautiful is their paradise of lies where the couple doesn’t even sleep together let alone having a healthy marriage.
The duo recalls how they met each other, fell in love and what led them to defeat the world in order to win their forever. However, reality is not always a bed of roses and the real life starts after marriage. Hae-in and Hyun-woo’s life after their wedding woes is what Queen of Tears bases its narrative on.
In the pilot episode itself we could see how Hae-in and Hyun-woo loathe each other. Now the legal director of Queens Group, Hyun-woo is mercilessly insulted by his wife and his family. Hyun-woo visits therapy, trying to find escapade and even contemplates divorce. Now, that’s pretty complicated!
As the episode ends with a shocking reveal from Hae-in, one can’t help but wonder how the distant couple would fall for each other all over again, sort their differences, discover their burried affection for each other and drown in the magical potion called love.
To be precise, the pilot episode is a total entertainer. Akin to writer Park Ji-eun’s previous blockbusters, Queen of Tears too starts on an engaging note. With phenomenal leads, gagworthy comedic moments, tense angst and drama, Queen of Tears is all set to be the sweet and fluffy romance of the year. Let’s wait and watch if the show can match the standards set by the writer’s previous crowd-pleasers.
Music and Other Departments?
Quite expectedly, Queen of Tears pilot episode lives up to its hype. Nam Hye-Seung’s music for the show is already on par with his exemplary works in super blockbuster Kdramas like Guardian, Mr.Sunshine, Crash Landing on You and Our Beloved Summer to name a few.
The cinematography team comprising Kang Yoon-soon, Wang Ho-sang, Park Se-hee and Kim Ji-hoon have also done a credible job in the pilot episode.
