What Is the Story About?

FBI Agent John Hartley has been hunting Nolan Booth, the greatest art thief in recent history for a few years now. He gets his chance when he finds out the Booth is after Cleopatra’s three eggs. Will Hartley catch him, or will Booth escape his clutches yet again? Then again, how did Hartley learn about Booth’s next heist?

Performances?

While this film has a relatively sound, albeit predictable plot – the lead trio of actors make this movie. While Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson are not at their best in this film, they do feed off each other’s onscreen presence – especially since most of the film is more about making brilliant quips than making a sound action thriller. The actors are definitely hampered by the dialogue and deserve to be praised for being somewhat memorable in Red Notice.

Analysis

One man has to team up with his ex-archnemesis to capture his current archnemesis. The man’s latest adversary is a criminal mastermind, and she has deleted the man’s previous life and got him turned in as a felon. He has been captured by cops for conspiring to steal the egg and must now fight his way out of prison. There are many films with similar “formula” that are currently available for streaming, but the overall story and the casting choice made by ‘Red Notice’ makes it a more watchable choice. Which is a big thing, considering that Netflix was overmarketing the hell out of ‘Red Notice’ before it came out – which is usually not a good sign when it comes to big-budget films.

‘Red Notice’ has some good action sequences, fight scenes as well as some really good quips that mainstream Hollywood screenwriters have to offer. While there are issues with the film’s dialogue, the overall story is worth a watch. But some of the other action and fight sequences in the film is too ridiculous than believable and it would have been better to leave them out. Also, the characters quip too much onscreen (Thank You MCU Films), especially during the worst possible times with the villains sometimes joining in, to trade quips.

Still, ‘Red Notice’ points out some well-known cliches and tropes that are regularly used in action crime/heist films. The film does have a decent overall plot, with the final plot twist helping us understand some key scenes from earlier. The movie does fail to deliver as much as its marketing seems to suggest; but in the end, ‘Red Notice’ does deliver something worth watching. The film has some good cinematography and editing, while the music ties everything well together. The lore portion of the film is not overly convoluted and that makes it easy for the film to catch the eye of a casual viewer.

Overall, Red Notice is a good one-time watch action-heist thriller. It is action-packed and funny at the same time – and having Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot as part of its main cast doesn’t hurt the film either.

Other Artists?

Ritu Arya as Inspector Das doesn’t have much to do onscreen, probably because the film producers decided to focus more on the core expensive trio of actors than give some important character arcs for the rare side character. Chris Diamantopoulos appears as a crime lord, Sotto Voce, which is a nice change of pace – and the actor manages to be funny and menacing at the same time.

Music and Other Departments?

Cinematography and editing are good. The CGI could have been slightly better. During the coliseum scene, it was obvious that Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson were standing in front of a green screen. The music department deserves a special mention as well. The screenwriter needs to work on the character dialogues but the overall story and final twist are good (as mentioned several times earlier).

Will You Recommend It?
