What Is the Story About?
Krishna Teja (Babai), Moin (Venkat Rao), Pawon Ramesh (Prasanna), Krishna Prasad (Yuvaraj) are the roommates in a hostel. Their room – Room No 54 has a history. What is it and how the escapades are passed down generations via the warden comprises the basic plot of the series.
Performances?
Krishna Tej, Moin, Pawon Ramesh and Krishna Prasad are the main leads in the series. Krishna Tej easily stands out among them. But, it is not due to his performance. Instead, it’s due to characterisation. It offers a unique perspective in an otherwise cliché filled narrative.
The remaining three, Moin, Pawon and Krishna Prasad, have their moments in parts and are adequate in their respective roles. But none managed to stand out like Krishna Teja. They have a scene or two to show some quirks that get highlights, but that’s it.
Analysis
DS Goutham creates, writes and directs Room No 54. It is a mini-series of sorts showing the hostel days of a bunch of guys.
The basic idea is nothing new and routine in the OTT space. A few top-rated series have come in this space in other languages. Room No 54 feels like the makers are trying to recreate the same effect with the Telugu cast.
The setting, the jokes and the whole production design seem so derivative. It is not that it isn’t the same here (as in hostel in Telugu states), but the way the whole thing is executed gives such a vibe.
Despite the short runtime, ten episodes feel a lot. It is mainly due to a lack of freshness and engaging making. Everything happens leisurely (and yet seems rushed) and lacks a solid narrative to hook the audience. The same editing gimmicks are repeated throughout. Many other things also add to the repetitiveness.
Each episode has a special guest which is an excellent idea, but they are not fully utilised. Only a couple of them has some spark. The one with Satya Dev, for example, has a nice idea but is utterly wasted.
The only brighter part of the otherwise dull series is a feeling of nostalgia. When the senior come and interact or when the fresher’s join Room No 54, it brings a sense of time that is gone. The recollection of the past, although not correctly executed, is the better aspect of the series.
Overall, Room No 54 offers nothing new and is poorly executed. Still, it provides brief moments of nostalgia to wade through the sea of predictability. If that is enough, give it a try; otherwise, stay away.
Other Artists?
Several known faces make cameos in the ten-episode series. They are Priyadarshi, Chitram Seenu, Uttej, Tanikella Bharani, RJ Hemanth, Gemini Kiran, Harish, Satya Dev, Racha Ravi etc. Satya Dev easily stands out due to his star appeal, but it is a weak part. Tanikella Bharani offers wise words but feels rushed. A few others who offer no message are fine.
Music and Other Departments?
The background score by RR Dhruvan goes well with the lighter tone of the movie. However, it also adds to the repetitive feeling of the narrative as it lacks variety. The cinematography by Pranav – Shashank is ordinary. The editing by Vishal Nyayapathi is okay. The writing is below par and offers nothing new.
