Taaza Khabar Season 2 Review – Bhuvan Bam Tries in this Lackluster Season

What Is the Story About?

Taaza Khabar Season 2 picks up from the finale of season 1 where Vasant aka Vasya Gawde – a sanitation worker gets a magical boon to predict future. He rises up to riches from rags through betting but is caught in the stride of a bad news that predicts his own demise. How will Vasya over-run death that he curated for himself ? Who is the nemesis that brought Vasya back to rags and how will he escape from this endless pool of troubles and debts while navigating difficult relationships with his parents, friends and girlfriends?

Taaza Khabar Season 2 finds the protagonist follow an inverse arc in comparison to the pilot season.

Performances?

Taaza Khabar Season 2 is largely carried by Bhuvan Bam – who is the heart of the series like its predecessor. However, the actor’s performance becomes strikingly one-note after a point owing to poorly written character arc. Despite Vasya going through hell, the writing and performance doesn’t convince us of the same.

Jaaved Jaaferi is a strong addition to the show’s second season. He plays the calculative, egoistic and brutally menacing nemesis Yusuf like a seasoned pro. He elevates the repetitive, predictable and boring cat-and-mouse game with his presence. However, a more polished writing could have shone the actor’s mettle quite a lot better.

Analysis

Created and written by Abbas Dalal and Hussain Dalal, Taaza Khabar Season 2 is directed by Himank Gaur. Streaming on Disney+Hotstar and spanning across 6 episodes of 35 minutes duration, the second season of the popular series follows Vasya aka Mr. Vardhan’s fall from the riches and his never ending loop of troubles and debts following the unfortunate events of first season.

Taaza Khabar Season 2 picks up exactly from the finale of the previous season when Vasya recieves the taaza khabar aka breaking news about his own death. His friend recalls his last meeting with Vasya and his intend of dying a good man’s death now that his fate is already sealed. But the narrative takes a turn when its revealed that Vasya was faking his death to save his loved ones from Yusuf – an influential businessman whom Vasya owes in billions.

The entirety of Taaza Khabar Season 2 is focussed on Vasya’s return to the rags and his never ending escapade from Yusuf’s clutches. The narrative of the second season takes a somersault from boon to bane where Mr. Vardhan now takes the fall for his blessings and struggles to repay Yusuf. While Vasya tries to out-wit Yusuf through his ‘blessings’, he’s taken aback each time with Yusuf’s actions that are always one-step-ahead.

One of the reasons the first season of Taaza Khabar worked was it’s freshness and shock value. Despite string-tight budget and lower production values, the pilot season was entertaining. But that cannot be said about Taaza Khabar season 2. The storyline gets boringly repetitive and predictable and the absence of logic – jarring.

The characters and their actions are annoyingly regular with only Jaaved Jaaferi trying his best to ruffle some feathers. The high points of Taaza Khabar Season 2 are the ones with Bhuvan Bam and Jaaved Jaaferi, while the romance sub-plot is un-necessary and distracting. Some of the proceedings of second season are so illogical and on-the-face that you can’t just ignore them. For example, Mr Vardhan roams around in public even after announcing his planned murder. Well, suspension of disbelief ..but at what cost?

To conclude, fans of Bhuvan Bam can find Taaza Khabar season 2 a silly timepass watch. But the show gets stuck in a hole of repetitiveness and the Bhuvan Bam-Jaaved Jaaferi duo struggle to escape its predictable proceedings their level best.

Music and Other Departments?

Remy Dalai’s cinematography doesn’t achieve anything extraordinary in the second season while recreating the slums of Mumbai. The production design of Taaza Khabar Season 2 is sub-par and is rather reminiscent of low-budget Youtube series which doesn’t help the show. Saurabh Lokhande and Jarvis Menezes delivers un-impressive music and score for the show which could have landed better with more technical effort.
