What Is the Story About?
Story:A big threat hits the Tamil film industry when a piracy website promises to release a biggie online before its release day. The movie is Garuda made on a mammoth three hundred crore budget and features the biggest star.
A semi-retired but honest and fast-working cop, Rudra (Arun Vijay), is assigned to investigate the issue when the Garuda producer files a case. Did Rudhra stop the piracy and catch the mastermind behind Tamil Rockerz is the movie’s basic story.
Performances?
Arun Vijay, a no-nonsense cop with a tragic past, is sincere and good in the role. He plays it like a star in a commercial film and is fine throughout. The two shades for the part seem to be written only to give an added depth to the role. It, therefore, isn’t as impactful as it feels unnecessary.
Vani Bhojan is competent even in a relatively smaller role compared. She holds her own in the few emotional scenes. Otherwise, it is primarily a straightforward team player role that blends into the ‘team’ rather than stands out. Ishwarya Menon looks lovely and has nice chemistry with the lead but is ultimately forgettable.
Analysis
Arivazhagan Venkatachalamdirects Tamil Rockerz. There is no doubt that he has picked an exciting series. The only question is if he has turned the excitement into something engaging and worthwhile or not.
The beginning of Tamil Rockerz, establishing the world of the film industry, the producers and the fans and the theatre atmosphere is good. It instantly draws our attention and holds it until the ‘hero’ is introduced.
The opening episode maintains the intrigue and ends with a bang of the warning of piracy of the biggie. It makes one look forward to what lies ahead with excitement.
Unfortunately, it is downhill after the first episode. As we move forward and more of the story is revealed, the narrative turns routine. It slowly becomes a revenge drama of sorts only with an exciting back of piracy. It is the fresh angle here.
Some parts in between manage to engage and raise curiosity, but they don’t add up to create a positive impact. They are just that in bits and pieces. It makes one curious enough to continue to know where it’s headed, but it ultimately leads to other cliches.
These small bits and the world of the movies are the only reasons one continues with the proceedings. Dialogues related to the cinema are akin to sermons even though well-intended and well-acted.
The big reveal related to the Tamil Rockerz falls flat. The way it’s shown makes it look generic. In fact, one might even look at them as anti-hero characters rebelling against the system. While it leads to mixed emotions, the truth is that any other illegal activity could have replaced the ‘piracy’ here. It would mean a change in the world, but the story wouldn’t have been affected. The whole thing points to a generic background presence that is easily replaceable.
Once the backstory is known, and all cards are shown, we are left with a typical cat and mouse game between the hero and the villain. It is alright, but we have seen it all before. The execution is neat, so there is little to complain about that, though. But, when it comes to predictability, there is no excuse.
Overall, Tamil Rockerz comes with an exciting backdrop. But what we have is a regular revenge drama using it. Still, an intriguing beginning and parts in between hold the attention. That’s just about it, which makes the series a passable affair.
Other Artists?
The veterans Azhagam Perumal and MS Bhaskar shine in supporting roles. The latter has only one scene, but it is impactful. Azhagam Perumal, as a loud-mouthed and irritating producer, finds a part that is right down his ally and delivers a stand-out performance. Tharun Kumar is acceptable in the scenes expressing anger. The role starts well but soon gets into a routine villain space.
Vinodhini plays a standard sidekick part-comic police support role in her typical style. G Marimuthu is okay in a part with nothing substantial. It did hold some promise intermittently but got floundered by the end. The rest of the actors are alright casting-wise. However, concerning the impact, none have it.
Music and Other Departments?
Vikas Badisa’s background score is adequate throughout. It helps give the series a racy feel in parts. B Rajasekhar’s cinematography is neat. There is a constant darker theme it adheres to, and it’s executed properly. VJ Sabhu Joseph’s editing could have been sharper during the dramatic portion. The movie drags as a result. The writing is adequate overall.
