What Is the Story About?
Following the death of a pharmaceutical tycoon Viswan Sen in an accident, his family members recieve notes regarding the division of his massive networth. However, in order to recieve a share of his wealth and in-turn be heirs of his kingdom, they should come to an isolated island called Moksha and live there for a week enduring trials and tribulations all by themselves.
Performances?
Despite having mostly flashback scenes, Ashutosh Rana remains the strongest and most seasoned player of the series. His presence is wicked, scary and almost a neat depiction of power hungry psychopaths.
Priya Anand gets her moment to shine towards the ending episodes and pulls off a decent feat marred by pathetic dubbing. Nandu Vijay Krishna and Akshara Gowda aren’t exceptional but they still fit the show’s world with their intriguing characters.
Analysis
Written by Sanjeev Roy and Prasanth Varma and directed by Anish Kuruvilla, The Mystery of Moksha Island is an 8 episode genre bending series that takes the shape of a mystery and a sci-fi medical thriller. It begins with a massive press coverage of Pharma tycoon Viswak Sen’s death and the looming uncertainty regarding the successor and heir to his business.
Following Viswak Sen’s flight accident, his relatives receive a cryptic note from him suggesting a division of his massive networth. However, in order to get their equal shares and in turn become a heir to his company, the family members need to come to Moksha island and live there for a week. The pilot episode suggests that Viswak Sen was an infamous womanizer with many public and secretive relations and marriages besides the owner of a huge medical conglomerate.
The Mystery of Moksha Island sets its mystery tone right from when the family members reach an almost deserted island with no network coverage. The family members who apparently don’t even know each other struggle to get accustomed to the island’s uncomfortable reality for the sake of Viswak Sen’s wealth.
Things get extremely ugly when one of the family members go missing. An investigation into the missing leads to deaths – one after the other leaving Jhansi and Vicky to team up and uncover the secrets of the island. Vicky, who is on a mission to find his missing sister and Jhansi – a heavily pregnant woman who lost her brother and husband in the island come together, only to get caught in the cobweb of uncomfortable secrets.
The Mystery Of Moksha Island starts on a promising note but goes haywire till the penultimate finale reveal. It has a lot of characters and flashbacks to keep a track on and a very complicated family-tree that doesn’t even reward much with its reveals. However, Ashutosh Rana is very convincing in his part and the series deserved to see more of him.
The Mystery of Moksha Island has a good idea behind it, but is marred by a sub-par execution. The characters are dumped with deaths one after the other but none of them seem to grieve convincingly well. This is clearly the fault in writing because the material on paper fails in tension building and emotions. The climax doesn’t gel well either, unless the makers have a second season in mind.
However, The Mystery of Moksha Island can work as a silly weekend binge if you’re a medical mystery thriller fanatic. But, there are better shows and movies out there to invest your time on.
Music and Other Departments?
One of the strongest assets of The Mystery of Moksha Island is its production design and cinematography. Naveen Yadav’s camera work has beautifully captured the stillness, motion, landscape and mystery of Moksha island alluding to the underlying claustrophobia the series induces. Shakthikanth Karthik’s music and score is just quite ordinary.
