What Is the Story About?

The documentary draws the journey of the Roshan family, including the three generations. It started with Roshan back in the 1950s, who was a great music composer and gave Bollywood some of its greatest melodies. Films like Taj Mahal, Bheegi Raat, and Dil Hi Toh Hai are still remembered as some of the greatest albums ever made, and they all had Roshan in them.

His legacy was continued by his younger son, Rajesh Roshan, who also became a highly successful music director with albums like Julie and Karan Arjun.

His elder brother Rakesh Roshan worked as an actor in many many films but he could never be successful on his own. He always needed to be a supporting actor. But later he switched to direction and made some highly impactful and memorable films in the Hindi film industry.

But the real phenomena arrived in 2000 with Hrithik Roshan. He became an overnight superstar with the madness we remember as Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

The documentary explores their lives and contribution to the Indian cinema.

Performances?

There are no performances as such because it is documentary. But let’s be honesh.

Director Shashi Ranjan, Netflix India and the Roshan family pulled a lot of big names.

Be it Shahrukh Khan, Karan Johar, Javed Akhtar, Anil Kapoor, Asha Bhosle, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor and many more.

But, it is still nothing compared to “The Romantics” or even “Angry Young Men”.

Analysis

When we finished watching this documentary, there was a question in our heads.

Why does this documentary even exist?

What’s the purpose of it.

There was only one justifiable answer. PR.

The first episode talks about Roshan. Yes, we get many insights about it primarily because he passed away very very early and we don’t have much information about him.

Knowing about him is truly interesting for anyone interested in cinema but it portrays him like a giant. He was great but let’s acknowledge that at his time SD Burman and Madan Mohan were dominating the industry. Even Shankar Jaikishan was formidable.

Roshan was a great composer but he was never the pivotal figure in his career.

Then comes Rajesh Roshan. He also had a fantastic run as a composer but he took heavy inspiration from many foreign bands for his music. There is absolutely no mention of any of that.

Then comes the episode of Rakesh Roshan. He is like the center of this documentary as his story is like a shadow even on the next episode that is based on Hrithik.

This third episode is the best episode of the season. Rakesh Roshan is very candid about his failures and it is interesting to see his honesty.

He talks about some very embarrassing moments in his life and even goes bold on how Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan didn’t take him seriously while filming Karan Arjun.

The next episode is on Hrithik Roshan. Oops, “Hrithik Roshan under Rakesh Roshan.”

Hrithik has so many things to talk about. Guzaarish, Lakshya, Bang Bang and many other important beautiful films.

The documentary even though it features Farhan Akhtar, Siddharth Anand and Bhansali doesn’t talk about any other film.

It just stays sush on any film which Hrithik has NOT done with his father. This is really heartbreaking.

Let’s assume that this documentary was only about the Roshan family.

Then also it is a bland documentary. It doesn’t talk about the reasons why Rakesh Roshan was shot. It doesn’t even mention the name of the people involved.

In 2016-17, Kangana Ranaut made a massive issue out of Hrithik Roshan and the entire Roshan family. She dragged everyone including others like Javed Akhtar.

Hrithik even had to give an interview to Arnub Goswami after that. This documentary has zero mention of that.

Let’s forget the controversy. Even Sussane Khan is totally non-existent. Her name is not even uttered in the entire documentary that shows Hrithik with his children.

So why does this documentary even exist?

PR.

It is a whitewashed, polished PR and nothing else. If you are a hardcore fan of Hrithik Roshan then fine otherwise there is absolutely nothing in this documentary to watch.

When I say nothing, I mean it.

Even about Roshan Sahab, a wikipedia page read would be enough.

Music and Other Departments?

With a prodigy like Rajesh Roshan in the house, the music part of the documentary is just fine. The opening credit part is really good but it doesn’t attract your attention at all.

The editing is also nice and the discovery of a cassette by Roshan Sahab while this documentary was being filmed is a nice treat.

Rest everything is just okay.

Highlights?

The celebrity fest.

Candid moments of Rakesh Roshan.

Making of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

Drawbacks?

Offers nothing new practically.

Totally ignores the controversial history of the family.

Did I Enjoy It?

No

Will You Recommend It?

No
