Just as when she begins to learn human ways, the goons return. She overpowers the goons with her telekinetic super-human strength when the gang leader attempts to hurt Kung Hee again. Meanwhile the secret laboratory owners start chasing her for her. Who is this mysterious girl and why is she being chased? Forms the crux of the story.
Performances?
Shin Si-ah as the mysterious girl who is officially named Ark 1 Datum point gives a terrifyingly enchanting performance. Unlike Kim Da-mi in the previous film, Shin Si-ah doesn’t interact much with humans and doesn’t know much about human ways. Her actionhttps://www.binged.com/person/park-eun-bin/ scenes are largely telekinetic and she does them so believably.
Analysis?
The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, a sequel to the 2018 action sci-fi film ‘The Witch: Part 1.The Subversion’, both written and directed by Park Hoon-jung who wrote screenplay for epic revenge action ‘I saw the Devil’, is a whole new story, set in the same world with tail-ends linked to its predecessor. You don’t need to watch the first part to understand this one, but if you’re already a fan of the prequel, there are some extra surprises waiting for you.
The film starts with a young pregnant woman being kidnapped and taken to a facility. Some years later, a blood-covered mysterious girl walks out of a laboratory like facility having lots of dead-bodies around her. She is shown to have telekinetic power like Goo Ja-yoon. She accidentally meets Kyung Hee who takes her under her wings as she felt indebted towards the girl for helping her out during a life-threatening crisis. As soon as the girl begins to get acquainted to humanly ways, she is chased by two different group of super-humans with different missions. What follows is revelation of her identity and the reasoning for her being chased.
Unlike The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion, The Witch : Part 2. The Other One doesn’t put efforts in writing better characters and stakes. There’s so much happening in this film that after a point it becomes confusing. Neither does the main lead get proper moments before the show-done, nor does the audience feel connected to the clueless humans that take her in. For a film that’s around 137 minutes long, The Witch: Part 2. The Other One possesses a wafer thin plot. Certain characters that eat up most of the screen-time turn out to be too irrelevant to the story. Even the action blocks are quite larger in number in this film, but more predictable and less innovative.
Although the exquisite world building in the prequel has already exhausted the novelty of the theme, there’s a shadow of Intrigue in The Witch : Part 2. The Other One. There are so many inquisitive loose ends, probably paving its way to the third part of the franchise. Unarguably, the revelatory scene post the climactic show-down is the thumping highlight of The Witch : Part 2. The Other One.
To be precise, the second installment in The Witch saga has double the action and gore, but falls flat when it comes to novelty and screenplay. The film is barely anything as engaging as its predecessor, but the tail-end leaves the audience with more questions than answers. And possibly, a third installment will fix the flaws of the second because the material is very promising.
Other Artists?
Park Eun-bin‘s Kyung-hee is a lovely character. The film has so much going on and it’s very chaotic, she doesn’t get much time to flex her acting muscles either, but still manages to be a lovely character that houses our protagonist. Seo Eun-su gets maximum screen-time amongst supporting characters, she does good except her English accent. Jin Goo plays Yong-doo well, but his character doesn’t get much importance.
Music And Other Departments?
Mowg’s music is good but doesn’t aid the elevation moments and fight scenes like in The Witch Part 1. Kim Young-ho’s camera work is adequate but doesn’t get a breather when everything around is so chaotic and fast. Stunt choreography also isn’t as kickass as its predecessor.
