What Is the Story About?

The Worst of Evil follows a undercover police investigator Park Jun-mo who infiltrates a massive criminal drug cartel that’s responsible for the illegal drug trade between Korea, China and Japan. The Lord of the drug cartel is Jung Gi-cheul who was Junmo’s wife’s first love, who also happens to be a high ranking police officer in the Narcotics department.

Performances?

So far in the first three episodes, Ji Chang Wook is the sole scene stealer with his seamless double life display as a honest cop (caught with inferior complex because of his low ranks in comparison to his wife) and an undercover as a petty gang member. His chemistry with Wi Ha-joon is also a sight to eyes.

Analysis

Written by Jang Min-suk and Directed by Han Dong-wook, The Worst of Evil, is a gangster action drama that pits a gangster and a police officer against each other. The only difference is the police officer is under-cover. With 3 episodes already streaming on Disney+Hotstar, The Worst Of Evil is already making headlines, thanks to its star-cast and action.

The series starts with Ji Chang Wook and Wi Ha-joon amidst a gang-war, albeit on the two ends, fighting the gangsters and Ha-joon is trying to save Im se-mi, while the former looks helplessly at se-mi. We are then thrown back to a flashback where Jung Gi-cheul and Park Jun-mo’s stories are revealed.

The former is a gangster, the latter is an honest, yet low ranking detective, married to Im Se-mi’s Yoo Eui-jeong, who is a high ranking cop in the Narcotics department. Jung Gi-cheul, is an ambitious and ruthless gangster who wins Gangnam over, and now peddles meth to Japan and China.

The illegal drug-trafficking has put the police department to a halt, and quite obviously our main guy Jun-mo is the only one capable enough to go undercover and expose the drug cartel that sells – Gangnam Crystal that ruins south korean youth.

The first three episodes of The Worst Of Evil, sets the premise, the history the trio shares, a potential love triangle and a very risky under-cover operation which potentially Jun-mo’s wife also would join.

So far, the action has been really good. The acting, really good. Endless blood shed, profanities, nudity and what not. Whatever you’d expect from a South Korean drama that surrounds gangsters, you’d find in The Worst of evil. That includes the thrill, the endless fights and also a truck-load of predictability.

The Worst of Evil is surely old wine in new bottle, but the wine is still tasty, engaging and engrossing. Who doesn’t like it when people beat each other up, conspire against each other, betray each other and chase each other? Let’s wait and see how far the show goes in the coming episodes.

Other Artists?

Wi Ha-joon plays an ambitious and notorious gangster Jung Gi-cheul who would do anything for money. The actor brings out a more balanced performance and shines far more when he’s a love-stuck boy who still pines for his first love. Im Se-mi, who plays Junmo’s wife, Gi-cheul’s ex-girl friend and a Narcotics department police officer hasn’t gotten enough space to flex herself, but we’re hoping more conflicts and performance from her in the coming episodes, if the starting shot was anything to go by.

Music and Other Departments?

The Worst of Evil is well scored by Hwang Sang-joon. His background score and music choices, elevate some of the scenes of the show very nicely. The camera work and editing is also impressive, so far.
