What Is the Story About?
Parna (Madhumita Sarcar) is a newly married woman who is a teacher by profession. Her husband Abhi (Rajdeep Gupta) is a doctor, and the family is well respected in society. What happens when an MMS featuring her leaks online? How her husband and family react to the situation is the series’ basic plot.
Performances?
Madhumita Sarcar puts up a sincere act as Parna. She gets across the vulnerability of the part well. However, sometimes Madhumita Sarcar tends to go a bit overboard. She conveyed the pain of a woman who is discarded by everyone neatly. The best sequence, though, is the one at the police station where the key message of the movie is delivered. Within the short career, one has to say the role of Parna is definitely a step in the right direction.
Analysis
Joydeep Mukherjee directs Uttoron series. The story comprises a topical issue that has been a bane to women since technology advancements. It is nothing new, but the idea is to deliver a crisp and to the point message, showing sufferings along the way.
The series’ biggest asset is its clarity, even if one might see it coming from miles away. Yes, it is a predictable one wherein the woman goes through all the pain to emerge stronger at the end. We see that arc with Parna.
The beginning of the story is, therefore, highly boring. It is not because of acting or writing, but more on account of the predictable end. The entire beginning and middle episodes feel like an elaborate set-up to the message at the end.
The narrative is neatly peppered with emotional moments and character developments that tie in with the overall theme. The father and son roles are essential in this regard in how they behave and evolve when the issue surfaces.
Even own family members’ reactions are neatly woven into the narrative without going too overboard. The final set involves people who come to the support and offer solace. They are adequate and do the job.
All said and done, Uttoron is all about the end. As mentioned previously, one gets a feeling of massive buildup after a point. The finale luckily lives up in delivering an emotionally satisfying feeling. It is both positive and negative here. While the easy way to conclude and wrap it up is a downer, the idea and bold choices it presents are well intended.
What we have in the end is a decent outing involving a serious issue related to the way we treat women in society. The difference in reception of man versus woman, and the theme of the body (as an object and objectification) and real soul are conveyed poignantly at the end.
Overall, Uttoron is a predictable fare with a neat end. The message and performances are sincere, making it a passable watch if one doesn’t mind the dramatic theme picked here.
Other Artists?
Every actor gets a decent amount of footage and a decently written role. Take the case of the father and son pair Rajdeep Gupta and Arindam Ganguly. The former starts off shakily but gets better as layers of his character are revealed. The latter is refined from the start and maintains the consistency getting small gestures of the role, right.
The rest of the cast is alright in the small but essential roles. Sawon Chakroborty as the liberal guy in the family, is good. He looks believable in the role and does his part with calmness. Swastika Dutta starts well but somehow loses steam by the time the story ends. It is a weak character, and she doesn’t have much to chew upon.
Music and Other Departments?
The background score by Raja Narayan Deb could have been better. Barring a few moments, it adds to the over the top feeling, which is tried to be dialled down by the actors. Rupanjan Paul’s cinematography is alright for small scale production. The colours are typical of such attempts. The editing by MD Piyasuddin is okay. The writing is appropriate throughout.
