Performances?
Tahir Raj Bhasin evolves well as a performer this season, effectively exploring the psychological conflicts and the hopelessness within Vikrant. Shweta Tripathi is equally brilliant in a layered character, who’s unable to move on from her past. Anchal Singh’s role as Purva takes an interesting turn this season and the actor responds to the challenge with grace, proving her mettle as a performer.
Saurabh Shukla provides a lot of depth to seemingly ordinary situations with his performance. Gurmeet Choudhary is yet another surprise package, bringing an appealing style to a substantial role. The likes of Arunoday Singh, and Brijendra Kala make a mark within the scope of their characters, while it’s still hard to decode the value that Anant Joshi brings to the show with his eccentric part.
Analysis
The first season of Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein, named after the hit Baazigar song, was a riveting action-romance about a man caught between love and an obligatory marriage. Struggling to lead a dual life, Vikrant loses his sense of morality when he ropes in a hitman to kill his wife and the plan backfires. Where’s Vikrant’s destiny headed? The much-awaited second instalment is finally here.
After tracing the story of an ordinary man sucked into a world of crime, torn between his past and present, the new season primarily unfolds like an abduction drama. The initial episodes focus on Akheraj’s efforts to guard Purva from the kidnapper. While Purva’s long-time friend Guru comes to his rescue, Vikrant continues to lead a life on the edge, consumed by guilt.
Vikrant is a pale shadow of his past. Engulfed by their circumstances, neither he nor his former lady love Dolly is happy. There’s a murder at the Dolly household and Purva’s brother Dharmesh goes missing. Purva outsmarts her hitman Aditya Hafeez at every step, even as Vikrant has other ideas. As Purva returns to Vikrant, Dolly half-heartedly accepts Akhil in her life.
Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’s second season is little about love and more about fear. The screenplay is sharper and Vikrant keeps finding newer excuses to land in trouble. The presence of Guru and the return of Purva only enhances Vikrant’s anxiety. Switching among the mind games of the not-so-innocent characters, the show is packed with numerous edgy sequences and juicy twists.
The show portrays how Vikrant is caught in a vicious circle and his helplessness in returning to a life of normalcy. It gets pulpier as Purva is committed to avenging the death of a loved one. While Dolly still has feelings for Vikrant, she is pleasantly surprised by Akhil’s accommodativeness in the marriage. It is a gigantic, delicious mess for all parties involved.
The unhurried narrative style complements the complexity of the situations that tap into the duplicity of human behaviour. There’s enough time for the viewer to absorb the tension within the grim ambience. The series is packed with one intriguing event after the other – the buildup is as effective as the result and shows the storyteller’s effort to stay true to the spirit of his world.
Those who’ve watched the first season and expect something along similar lines, be prepared to be surprised. Watch it with an open mind and provided you have a taste for slow-burn crime dramas, Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein Season 2 is a wholesome meal – where the top-notch execution is matched by terrific performances and sharp writing. The ending, just like the first part, is an absolute tease and leaves you flummoxed.
Music and Other Departments?
It’s always fascinating when storytellers understand the value that good music can bring to a story, more so in the digital medium (that provides the luxury of minimising its scope). Composer duo Shivam-Anuj continues to pack a punch with a charismatic score and hummable songs. Murali Krishna’s cinematography, Sidharth Sen Gupta’s layered screenplay and Amar Shetty’s slick action choreography lend an undeniable finesse to the final product.
