What Is the Story About?
The journey of Bishan Khosla (Jimmy Shergill) continues in the second season with new players in the town. He struggles to keep things in order that were set in motion by his actions to protect his son Abeer.
Where does the action of Bishan Khosla take him? What happens to his son Abeer who is now in jail? And finally, the progress of police investigation on Bishan Khosla by Kiran Sekhon comprises the main plot of Your Honor’s second season.
Performances?
Jimmy Shergil is the lifeline of the Your Honor series. His characterisation and intense act are the reason one is intrigued with the proceedings in the first place. Luckily, for Your Honour, Jimmy Shergil maintains the same passion and interest in the role in the second season, as well.
It lacks freshness, which is expected, as it’s the second season, but the act nonetheless inspires one to give it a shot. The beginning of the role happens with a bang for the actor where he has critical confrontations scenes with two different gangsters. It goes missing as the series progresses, barring the occasional moments like the press meet at jail premises. The character’s judge part is also used little compared to the previous season. In the end, Bishan Khosla is one of the memorable outings for him in recent years.
Analysis
E Niwas returns as director for the second season of Your Honor as well. It helps in maintaining the mood and consistency with the various characters.
The series is a direct continuation of the events of the first season. So, it would be better if one has seen Your Honor previously. The opening episode doesn’t have the same impact as season one. It is, however, enough to keep things flowing and maintain a small level of curiosity.
The different worlds of the mafia (Tarn Taran and Mudki family) are neatly established. Bishan Khosla is the common enemy for them. It is this hook that is the mainstay of the series. How would Bishan, as a judge, escape the clutches of these guys?
However, the initial few episodes of the series appear very formulaic. Each individual act sticks out, and a cohesive narrative is missing. The many subplots involving Abeer, Harman, Indu, and Yashpreet pull the story in different directions.
Things finally get back on track with the return of inspector Kiran Sekhon. Apart from Bishan Khosla, she is the other character that unifies the various threads. There are some tense moments due to her moves on different people.
Together, Bishan Khosla and Kiran Sekhon salvage the second half of the series. Their cat and mouse games are what is exciting and keep one hooked.
The downside is the drama related to most of the characters. They are not only predictable but also drag the narrative. The Abeer and Indu plot are clear examples of this case. They offer nothing new and consume a lot of time. The emotional underpinning of different characters is alright, but when it is done in such a lacklustre way, the whole thing turns boring.
The ending episodes lack the bite of the mid-season, but they are still better or on par with the start. It is what makes the whole thing decent at best. The story is set to continue in the third season as well. We have to see if the same cast returns or are there any changes.
Overall, Your Honor season two lacks the freshness of the original and drags during the dramatic portions. However, it gets right the thriller elements right with neat twists in place. It is the series’ ultimate calling card and what makes it a decent watch.
Other Artists?
Most of the cast of the first season is present in the second one as well. Among them, Mita Vashisht impresses the most. She is key to the exciting parts of the series. Mita Vashisht holds the raw and unpredictable edge. It is what makes her shine. Richa Pallod’s character threatens to be interesting but gets on a routine path immediately. It is the same case with Mahie Gill, as well. She starts powerfully but ends disastrously.
Pulkit Makol is less insufferable than the first season, but he is still not in the zone yet. He still tries too hard to make an impression. Pulkit is better, but that is not enough. Gulshan Grover is alright in a half-baked one-note role. Zeishan Quadri stands out initially for his verve but soon gets repetitive. Kunj Anand’s role gets more melodramatic here. He is okay, as is the rest of the cast.
Music and Other Departments?
The background score is sufficient. The cinematography by Santosh Vasandi is alright. The visuals lack the slickness, but it is par for course it was the case in the first season, too. The editing by Abhishek Seth could have been tighter. The writing is decent for the most part.
