What Is the Story About?
A young man works around the clock in a corporate company, his initial enthusiasm wanes out eventually and he becomes nothing more than a corporate drone. However,a zombie outbreak in Japan changes things for him and he gains back the spark of his life setting out to do things he always wanted from life.
Performances?
Eiji Akaso is very charming and Tendo. He sells the enthusiastic fresher turned corporate machine turned enthusiastic & chirpy super-hero with life affirming goals and selfless ambitions with ease.
Mai Shiraishi is a badass. Her action is commendable and deserved more in the film. Shuntaro Yanagi as Kenichiro, Tendo’s best-friend fits the part and adds the right comic relief.
Analysis
Adapted from the manga of the same name “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead” is a zombie comedy and also a coming of age sorts of a movie. A genre blend of zombie horror, comedy and also life lessons, Zom 100 is equal bits of fu and frolic.. and sometimes over the top and long.
Tendo is a fresher, an enthusiastic one at that who gets worn out by the toxic work culture in Japan. He loses the sense of time and fun and life until he realises one fine morning that the city is caught up under a terrifying zombie attack. Zom 100 takes a fun dig at how gravely work culture affects employees when Tendo is shown to be relieved at the fact that the city is brought down by a pandemic and he no longer needs to work.
In his own adventurous little world, all by himself Tendo begins to enjoy all those fleeting moments of life in the company of ‘zombies’ because his boss no longer can torture and overwork him. He rekindles with his school-time-best friend and meets Shizuka and the trio embarks on a thrilling, fun and scary ride to escape the zombies.
Unlike South Korean films and shows, Japanese Industry isn’t the best when it comes to making zombie entertainment. Zom 100 evidently falters at places because of ‘lack of familiarity with the genre’ may be? Or it’s need to blend in multiple genres, all together? Nevertheless it still remains fun. The actors share good chemistry together and the writing does share few life lessons in between.
In short, Zom 100 is fun. It’s not a perfect entertainer. It does drag quite a lot. But it’s still entertaining. It’s got a very charming cast dragging the hell out of corporate work culture. If you love zombie comedies, Zom 100 is worth your time. A not so faithful but not so faithless manga adaptation for popcorn time.
Music and Other Departments?
Zom 100 bucket list of the dead has a very funny and unabashedly unrealistic writing. If the writers thought it would work.. they’re right it does work. The film subverts zombie genre in many ways despite the eye-sore of a shark-vfx. Nothing commendable about the music or cinematography, either.
