31st October will witness the release of multiple films from the Southern region. Some of them are already gaining quite an attention like Amaran. One of the films to be released on the day is Bloody Beggar. The film is a dark comedy revolving around the life of a beggar, played by Kavin.
The film becomes revolutionary in the terms of the hero it chooses. Indian cinema has previously made films with heroes as a common man, heroes as unemployed youth and even glorified heroes as thieves and tricksters. Mera Naam Joker went on to create a hero out of a clown- something which is the subject of people’s mockery. But all these heroes had a charm in them because of the actors who played them. There was no reality to the characters.
As discussed earlier, Indian cinema has even hailed thieves, who are even more degenerates than the beggars in a society. But from Sholay to Dhoom, the thieves were not portrayed as thieves, but the actors’ persona remained, making the hero a degenerate character.
Bloody Beggar not only can be hailed for its attempt to create a hero of a beggar- who are considered the lowest in a society; but also, to present a beggar in its truest sense. Kavin is completely unrecognizable in his role as the beggar. It is only when he is brought to the mansion and given a makeover, we find out the charisma of a handsome man behind that wretched face of a beggar.
The trailer that was launched recently for the movie showcases the actor doing crazy things, begging for alms, enacting a disability to create pathos in the mind of the people etc. as a beggar would usually do. He is not shown fighting with gangsters, protecting the honor of a woman etc. that has been seen in films like Coolie No. 1 and Mard. The role is pretty genuine and convincing.
The makers of the film, the writers and most of all, Kavin have done a great job in making a protagonist out of a beggar. And not a flamboyant, charismatic, muscular villain; but a wretched, lowly and generic beggar.
