Kanguva, starring Suriya and Bobby Deol was initially set for release on October 10th, but possibly to avoid a clash with Rajinikanth starrer Vettaiyan, the film was postponed to be released on 14th November. In time there will be no new big releases that can in any way hamper Kanguva’s collection. But now, the film will be clashing with Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2, set to be released on November 15th.
Kanguva is a huge budget period film made with a budget of more than 300 crores. The film stars many big faces of Southern as well as National cinema. The cast include- Suriya, Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Jagapathi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam, Yogi Babu etc. Such a huge budget would obviously look forward to the maximum yield the makers can get from the film. As a result, the creators shifted the film to avoid a clash that could have resulted in potentially low collection.
Gladiator (2000), a film by Ridley Scott is based on the second century Roman empire and it was so well made that it is considered as one of the best cinematic creations of all times. The film went on to win five Oscars including the Oscar for Best Picture. The sequel for the film will be released this year (after a long gap of two and a half decades). The first film did not gain that huge popularity in India though it made a worldwide collection of 450 million+ dollars. But slowly after the exposure of the Indian audience to global content, and with the advent of OTTs, it gained popularity in India.
Now the second film of the franchise is looking forward to a good reception in India. Considering the director’s and the film’s reputation, it becomes certain that passionate movie watchers will definitely watch this film.
But does Kanguva need to be afraid of it? Can it impact Kanguva’s collection in any manner? The answer is, not significantly. Though Gladiator has been appreciated by Indian film watchers, I still have not created a fan base properly in India like Marvel has created. Also, most Indian audiences consist of casual movie watchers, and they won’t go for such movies.
Still, if Kanguva aims to shine overseas, this film will pose a huge threat to it. Also, it can also impact Kanguva’s collection in the northern states. Considering the star cast, it is evident that Kanguva is looking forward to appealing the northern audience as well, but Gladiator can pose a threat to it.
Concludingly, though the film can impact Kanguva’s collection; the impact does not seem to be so strong as of now, that makers need to worry about it in any manner. Rest, one can be assured of the results once both the films release.
