Streaming services change the movie-watching experience, and there is still debate over whether Amaran should break the four-week rule that applies to other industries before it is released on OTT. At present, the delay keeps theaters open and the magic of the big screen alive. Others feel faster transition onto OTT will suit the home-bound audiences of today.
The four-week theatrical window collects box office receipts before making the movie available to be streamed on any online portal. Amaran may follow or break this rule due to its high budget and expectation level. According to the 2023 report, 70% of viewers prefer viewing new movies at home after two weeks, which changes the viewer’s preference, thereby modifying traditional gaps.
Amaran is concentrating on the battle between demand in digital and traditional windows of theatrical. A small window can reach a larger, more positive audience quickly. However, with depressed ticket sales at theaters lately, this may be adverse to box office collections as well as alienate owners of theaters who rely on exclusive shows to bring in audiences to the theater.
Breaking standard means risking losing the distinct, engaging theatrical experience but might give Amaran a humongous digital viewership with chatter being continued online. An early OTT release can also set a precedence that would make other films shy away from cinemas, which in turn can prove detrimental to cinematic culture for traditionalists as theaters bring excitement and event-like moments.
The box office of Amaran was average. For a film as eagerly anticipated as this one, it did little better at the box office than an opening week’s gross of $40 million, short of expectations. This might have been spurred by the advance OTT, as so many opted for streaming instead. Still, the approach proved effective to boost its international reach at least enough to balance out box office revenues falling.
As far as goals are concerned, Amaran may or may not breach the four-week window. It will be a help to the movie in case quick access to more people matters. The tradition will be favored in case more stress is given on cultural theaters. There is a possible effect of the film industry because Amaran’s decision depicts the shift in equilibrium that movies at the cinema get against the movie streaming service.
