The good news is that Kanguva is coming to North Indian theatres under the able guidance of Pen Marudhar-the trouble is well in the offing. There have been instances recently of southern releases failing in the North, first through strange releases patterns and even through silent boycotts. The world knows too well that a good number of Southern films finding it hard to pitch in the north often had their struggles with prime screens and distribution. The said divide seems too stark, even with Southern cinema now ruling the roost in terms of international popularity after becoming hits back home like Pushpa and KGF.
Kanguva will attempt to change the current scenario. A first-rate distributor like Pen Marudhar-a group with successful handling experience of blockbusters like RRR-enters the game with the hope that it will not face similar hitches. Come on, this isn’t just a film-the mammoth ₹350-crore fantasy action extravaganza stars Suriya and Bobby Deol, ordained to make a great mark over India.
The Southern films are often slotted into odd screening hours or else receive many limited releases; often, they get traction only when massive fans raise cries for justice or only after the social media buzz renders them a chance. Kanguva sets to change this, shaping up to be a wide, timely release in North India with regular, 3D, and IMAX formats. The coming aboard of Pen Marudhar feels like a tactical life saver on this count.
Just as producers, they have set November 14, 2024, as the release date of Kanguva. Now all eyes will be on it as to whether the film can finally bring a close to the North-South divide in Indian cinema. It would serve as a moment of reckoning for distributors and theatres to set in stone that excellence in cinema can leave regional biases behind. One movie, whether Kanguva clears the hurdle or not, has certainly attracted everyone’s attention.
