Anjaamai is a legal drama in Tamil, which deals with the story of an agricultural farming family belonging to humble classes in Tamil Nadu who are confronted with the circumstances brought upon by the NEET examination. S. P. Subburaman has directed the film where Vidaarth plays the role of Sarkar, an artist who turned into a farmer who fights to make the dream of his son Arundhavam get materialized as a doctor.
Anjaamai received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release on June 7, 2024. Many critics went overboard in praise for the leading performances as well as the poignant social message; few felt that the melodramatic presentation was a distraction from that message. Yet criticism apart, the heartfelt approach in portraying an issue that is crucial did manage to draw audiences to it.
Given that the OTT platform is making the movie more accessible; it is special. Movies like Anjaamai are now accessible to people who were unable to see them when they were first released. This benefits regional cinema, and it benefits Tamil-language films even more because they can break down geographical boundaries and reach audiences who are not fluent in the language.
Such a digital release can provide a very relaxed viewing, allowing audience members to experience the film as little or as much as they want. Subtitles, not to mention the availability of multiple languages, can also bring in a larger audience for the film.
Regional films on OTT enjoy longer periods of viewership, thereby giving the film a golden period to widely spread through word of mouth. Thus, Anjaamai would imply continuous involvement as viewers who value its emotional depth and social insight share their experiences, potentially resulting in broader recognition.
With the digital release of Aha, the film, which had mixed reviews when it first came out in theatres, gets another chance at the small screens. With its powerful message and outstanding acting, this movie will do well in this market and has a high possibility of becoming a huge hit on the digital platform. If Anjaamai can make use of this chance in a meaningful way; only time will tell.
