SP Subburaman’s directorial debut, Anjaamai, definitely did not go unnoticed at its theatrical release on June 7, 2024. With Vidaarth, Vani Bhojan, and Rahman in the leads, the film was yet another take on the plight of a small farmer and his family in the face of the NEET exam. Mixed reviews of the movie reflected its impact, much like the pressing social issue that it had tried to address.
Considering the performance of the lead cast, audiences as well as critics have complimented the efforts of the actors, particularly Vani Bhojan, for sure who has given her career’s finest performance to date, as the determined mother1. Her emotionally charged portrayal combined with Vidaarth’s earnest portrayal as a supportive father really touched quite a few hearts. Excellent performance from Rahman after a long wait also made the film appealing. Emotionally moving, and easy to identify with was the first half of the movie with the hardship of the family.
But not so well received as a second half, turning into a courtroom drama. It, while some appreciated the effort to bring broader systemic issues that beset the education system in focus, others felt it was too much sermon and melodrama. Despite all these criticisms, “Anjaamai” has been appreciated for its good script and truthful narration.
A few days before its OTT release on October 29, 2024, there is a buzz about how it is going to be received in the digital medium. The OTT is much more extensive than the audience who watch it in theatres. On top of that, the digital platform would allow far deeper discussions about the themes and messages of the film. The social commentary in the film related to the NEET exam and the effects it is having on students from deprived backgrounds would automatically create debates and sensitize people.
Anjaamai” is indeed a powerful, thought-provoking film that already succeeded in making big at the box office. More amplification of its message would be promised by its OTT release as well as further outreach.
