Cinema is as subjective as it gets. What appeals to the masses might not appeal to an individual, and sometimes, even the inverse stands to be true. And such has been the case with more or less every title that has been released recently, either on OTT or in cinemas.
Tamil-language feel-good film ‘Meiyazhagan’ is an example. The Karthi and Arvind Swamy starrer family drama, streaming on Netflix since October 27, follows Arumozhi Varman a 40-year-old man who has to, for absolutely unavoidable reasons, revisit his hometown after 22 long years of being abandoned from it.
Not only was the film hailed for its calm and serene filmography, the leading actors were also widely appreciated for their performances during its averagely successful theatrical run. However, the viewing numbers on Netflix haven’t been in tandem with the anticipation that the title had created for its OTT release.
Having clocked a total of nearly 19 L viewing minutes, the film has only been streamed around 11k times. This is not at all what was expected of the film, especially taking into account the positive and critical acclaim that it had initially debuted to.
Which is to say that despite the fact that the feel-good title accomplishes its goal and delivers a light-hearted story, the film hasn’t quite succeeded in reaching the target audience it deserves.
