‘Is there a law that says girls shouldn’t talk about sex?’
It is the 21st century and there is still so much stigma revolving around discussions about love, lust and sex, especially when it comes to female desire. Bollywood tried to destigmatise it with films like Lust Stories and Ajeeb Daastaans, taking a bold step to explore themes of sexual desire, particularly from a female perspective—a subject often brushed under the carpet.
The stigma surrounding female desire is so deep that it is often internalized, leaving women hesitant to discuss these topics even amongst themselves. But such films have sparked conversations in some communities, marking a small but important step towards breaking these barriers.
Now The Tamil film industry also joins the movement with its anthology ‘Ssshh’—a compilation of four stories written and directed by Prithivi Adithya, Vaali Mohan Das, Harish GY, and IB Karthikeyan.
The four segments are titled Kamathupaal, Reload, Vaanmathi, and Eni Ellam, narrating tales that show the importance of sex education, and the expression of lust and love by individuals from various walks of life.
Shifting from the usual action-packed stories the industry has been delivering, it has now turned an eye towards telling less addressed stories like Ssshh that talks about love and desire in an attempt to destigmatise it.
Films like these are quite important in challenging the taboo around desire and sex education, an important discussion in this rapidly changing world.
