Pa Ranjith directed and Chiyan Vikram starrer film Thangalaan, after a successful venture in the theatres, was set to be released on OTT platform on 20th September. However things turned southwards and the OTT release of the film was stalled for a legal reason.
The film’s release on OTT platform was delayed due to a court case by a man named Porkodi. He had pleaded a ban on the film from the OTT platforms as the film contained several scenes that hurt the sentiments of Vaishnavites. The case was running in the Madras High Court which gave its verdict on the case on October 21.
The court disagreed on putting a ban on the film. As per the court the film did not affect the Vaishnavite sentiments in any manner. It also mentioned that though the film had already been released theatrically with the approval of censor board, a ban on its OTT release is irrelevant and cannot be done.
With this hurdle for the film’s release on OTT cleared, Thangalaan will look forward to be released in OTT platforms. Fans can expect the film to be released on OTT by Diwali.
The film was released in the theatres in original Tamil language on 5th August and emerged as quite a successful work. Slowly the film surpassed the mark of 100 crores in the box office. Owing to its huge popularity, the film was later launched in Hindi language across the theatres all over India.
As the film was seeking its release on OTT, the case was filed which stalled is release. Although, the issue has been cleared now, the delay of more than a month will surely affect the film’s viewership. On the contrary, the film might also gain some following due to this controversy around it and turn out to make a huge fanbase on OTT platforms.
