Vettaiyan is among the most troubled box office histories for Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan. The movie got off to a great start, with a gradual decline in ticket sales during the weekdays, with weekends seeing some breathing space for ticket sales. As of the 13th day, the domestic collection stood at 140.03 crores net, while the worldwide gross has swollen to 246.23 crores. Still, the film failed to create that much-anticipated blockbuster wave, especially in northern India, where it barely registered any presence.
One of the main issues with Vettaiyan is that it didn’t do much to attract audiences outside of Tamil-speaking regions. The film didn’t create much excitement in North India, and even viewers from other parts of the country, like non-Telugu speakers, didn’t show much interest. This lack of appeal to a broader audience hurt its box office performance, especially with bigger movies set to take over during the Diwali season.
But with its theatrical run nearing to close, all are gazing at its OTT release. Rajinikanth’s loyal fan will still hope for the film to gain momentum in the streaming space. And with streaming reach tremendously more extensive, Vettaiyan might open its arms to a whole new area of audience. Such big names in a film tend to have that second life on digital platforms, where audiences may be more forgiving and inclined to watch a movie at their own pace.
Rajinikanth has a huge fanbase in the North, and even though Vettaiyan didn’t perform well in theatres there, his fans still love him. Many people in North India have followed Rajni’s movies for years, and while the film may not have drawn big crowds to the cinemas, OTT offers a great chance to reach those fans. On streaming platforms, people can watch at their convenience, and Rajinikanth’s strong fanbase in the North will likely tune in to see him in action. This gives the film another shot to succeed, especially since many fans prefer the comfort of watching at home.
With a packed ensemble cast featuring some legends like Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, and Fahadh Faasil, it is expected to engage much better after its OTT release. The film’s fantastic cast may catch the attention of viewers who missed it during its theatrical release. OTT could be the game changer for the Vettaiyan saga, given how the film has been a disappointment at the box office.
