The film Magic, by Gowtam Tinnanuri, will hit theatres on December 21, 2024. Its well-known premise of four teenagers writing a song for a college festival makes it hard to stand out in a genre where the plots are often so similar
Magic comes with a young cast and music of Anirudh Ravichander, which could be over-reliant on those aspects. If the characters are not well developed, it might very conveniently turn into just another forgettable teen drama.
Such the movies often undertake a promise of emotional development but, in reality, botch it. To be noticeable in a highly saturated market, Magic will need more than just a great soundtrack.
With the youthful cast, there is vibrancy added into the film, but they may not have been nuanced enough to make the narrative really interesting. For magic to form a real emotional attachment with viewers, it calls for real and approachable characters.
At this point, it’s hard to say if Magic is going to strike the hearts of viewers or be another missed opportunity. If not more than in its attraction on the surface, then it could soon be forgotten.
