Rajinikanth’s latest project Vettaiyan which also features Amitabh Bacchan, was released on 10th October 2024 worldwide. The film earlier was about to clash with Suriya starrer Kanguva, which was later shifted to 14th November by the makers. This further reduced the competition for the film. The film stars a variety of big names apart from the two megastars like Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Dushara Vijayan, Rithika Singh, Manju Warrier etc. All this had created a big buzz around the film.
The film also had received great response for the pre-bookings of tickets by audiences as well. And the reunion of Rajinikanth and BigB after 33 years was sure to light up the box office. The analysts expected an opening collection of 125 crores for the film. In the meantime, reports talked about the film’s OTT rights being sold to Amazon Prime Video at a staggering amount of 95 crores before the film’s release. This added to the buzz around the film and made it a big thing in the field of Indian cinema this month.
But after the release of the film, reports disclosed the first day collections which are calculated at about 70 crores globally. The film supposedly amassed about 22 crores in the state of Tamil Nadu, and the total collection domestically has been figured to be about 46 crores. The film received a great response in countries like the US, Malaysia and Singapore and the overseas collections for day 1 were reported to be 23 crores.
Considering the hype around it and the factors that gave the film an advantage, plus the huge amount in which the OTT rights for the film were bought; this collection looks a very meagre one. The film which was so eagerly awaited managed just 46 crores in India which is almost half of what Devara had collected. By numbers the film looks a bit disappointing as of now and possibly after one week of release it will start making profit on its budget.
With so many stars on board, the film was believed to be one of the biggest movies of the year, but the performance in box office somehow takes one aback.
