Not just about the collections, Jr NTR in an interview spoke of some of his thoughts on the success of Devara: Part 1 at the box-office. Well, Devara came out all right money-wise. It was never a flop but still somewhere down the line Jr NTR felt something is missing. He spewed, for these years later it is not a numbers game anymore. We spoke to him about his worries for how people are watching movies today— critiquing further, patrolling scenes in and of themselves. The naivety of merely sitting down, collecting some popcorn and losing yourself on the story is beginning to change.
Just the other day in an interview with India Today, Jr NTR was seen talking about how he views his kids enjoy movies. They simply give no f about whether a movie stars some actor they dislike, or cost too much money, and even if it was otherwise hyped to the hilt. They just…watch. And enjoy. No strings attached. But he believes adults have lost that. In our efforts to critique everything, have we lost the ability to just watch a movie? He attributes part of that shortfall to the change in consumer behavior which is why Devara seems to have underperformed at the ticket window as compared with a film like Kalki.
For Instance, Kalki had a fabulous second weekend as well with Rs 52.6 crore on Sunday and another 12.2 crore net on Monday. In comparison, Devara fetched a little more with a two-day tally of Rs 12.65 crore. I mean, it’s not anything, but that’s not exactly a box office king. This is where Jr NTR’s frustration lies—Devera could have been appreciated in an other age, where hearts watched instead of minds being on overdrive.
But he remains hopeful. Jr NTR on the other hand is of the opinion that this trend, tendency to pick holes everywhere might change. At this point in history audiences may find that carefree innocence again, moviegoers watching a narrative for its own good entertainment. Not everything needs to be viewed with a side of heavy analysis. You need to laugh, cry and just let go for a few hours. It can really help you to exhale in uncertain times.
That is what Jr NTR lacks It’s not just about Devara. This is about how we view movies nowadays, and if we are forgetting the love of it all that cinema brings.
