Kalki 2898 AD, the highest grossing Indian film of the year 2024, which shattered many records, now sets its eye for international recognition. The epic drama is set to be screened in the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
The BIFF is South Korea’s first international film festival and has been recognized as one of the most prestigious film festivals in Asia. It was established in 1996, and since then it is being held annually in Haeundae-gu in the city of Busan. This year, the 29th edition of the festival will be celebrated from 2-11 October. Kalki 2898 AD, the commercially most successful film of India this year, has been selected to be screened in the festival on 8th and 9th October.
Kalki 2898 AD, is a Telugu epic action-drama which is set in a dystopian setting of the year 2898 (which denotes 6000 years after the war of Mahabharata). The film revolves around the mythology of the incarnation of Vishnu as Kalki. The film describes the situation where the whole civilization has perished and only one city- Kashi remains where all the power is concentrated in the hands of a tyrant Yaskin. The plot is about saving an unborn child (Kalki) from the hands of Yaskin to revive the old times. The film is filled with mythological allusions which impressed the audience a lot. The film became an immediate success in India and worldwide breaking multiple records. The film also had received quite positive critical reviews as well.
The film being screened in the BIFF is a gesture to showcase, quality cinema too can be commercial success and vice versa. The screening of the film at BIFF will encourage more directors to take sensible approaches even when filming a commercial film. The screening will also provide the film with international validation. The film has already been appreciated by audiences all around the world, and Indian critics have had positive reviews for it. This accolade though will give the film acknowledgement on a global level.
