Inspiration is a vital part of art, but sometimes it can go astray. Pushpa 2 seems to have taken a page from Bollywood’s book for its dance number, and unfortunately, it misses the mark.
No, the issue isn’t vulgarity. It’s the loss of grandeur and uniqueness that Pushpa was celebrated for. Bollywood’s current approach to dance numbers has become more about being “Instagram-friendly” than cinematic brilliance.
Here’s the pattern — the lead dancer is always in the middle of the frame, and every movement is designed to be easily replicable for short-form videos. The background dancers, clad in neutral colors like beige, play a supporting role rather than enhancing the visual appeal. Songs like Tauba Tauba are catchy but forgettable.
Now, think back to Pushpa: The Rise. Songs like Srivalli didn’t follow this formula. They created an atmosphere. The colors popped, the setting felt alive, and the choreography wasn’t just for social media trends — it told a story. That’s what made Pushpa stand out.
But Pushpa 2 drifts away from the masala of the south to the simplicity of Bollywood. The song Kissik doesn’t follow the Bollywood formula, but songs like Peelings do.
Where are the shortcomings?
Firstly, the camera work. It is extremely weak, with all the action confined to the center of the frame — lazy, to say the least. But the major problem is the dance steps.
They are purely made for Instagram reels, and it’s sad to see this change. The costumes are simplistic, and the lyrics are as easy as nursery rhymes. The costumes also follow the previously discussed Bollywood pattern.
It’s fine to bring some changes. And at this point, you can’t ignore the importance of social media. But for a film like Pushpa, it’s disheartening to see it moving away from its core elements.
What made Pushpa special was its raw authenticity. Pushpa 2 should be setting trends, not following them. If it continues down this path, it risks being just another film riding the wave of fleeting trends rather than being the wave itself.
