Varun Tej Konidela’s upcoming film ‘Matka’ has now got a release date and its coming this November 14 in theatres. It is a retro crime drama helmed by Karuna Kumar who is known for his films like ‘Palasa 1978’, ‘Sridevi Soda Center’ and more. ‘Matka’ is a pan Indian film and will release in theatres in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam.
The release date announcement for ‘Matka’ came with a new poster featuring Varun Tej in a retro look walking down the stairs in a suit with a cigarette pressed between his lips. The whole background has prominent presence of bulbs used for lighting just like that in the 60s or 70s.
Based on Matka gambling scams that rocked the country in the 20th century, ‘Matka’ is set in between 1958 and 1982 and follows the story of the mastermind behind these scams. Matka gambling is a form of betting and lottery which originally involved betting on the opening and closing rates of cotton transmitted from the New York Cotton Exchange to the Bombay Cotton Exchange. it was further modified in the 1960s and is illegal in India now.
Written and directed by Karuna Kumar, ‘Matka’ stars Varun Tej Konidela, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Nota Fatehi, Naveen Chandra, Kishore Kumar G., Ajay Ghosh, Vijaya Ramaraju and Roopalakshmi among others. A G.V. Prakash Kumar musical, ‘Matka’ has cinematographer by A Kishore Kumar and editing by Karthika Srinivas R.
The film is produced by Dr. Vijender Reddy Teegala and Rajani Talluri. A Vyra Entertainment and SRT Entertainments production, ‘Matka’ will make way to theatres in 14th November, 2024 and that means clashing with Suriya and Bobby Deol’s highly awaited ‘Kanguva’.
Moreover, for those unaware, Prime Video is making a web series called ‘Matka King’ starring Vijay Verma in the lead and it also focuses on something very similar. In fact the first looks of both Varun Tej led film and this series follow the same kind of theme. How much of it matches though remains to be seen.
