Despite having a relatively limited market reach in the Indian OTT landscape, SonyLIV has carved out a distinct identity by consistently delivering compelling Indian original shows in recent years. While other platforms have dabbled across different genres, SonyLIV has leaned heavily into political thrillers or political dramas, both fictional and rooted in historical events.
This focused strategy has earned the platform critical acclaim and positioned it as a go-to destination for viewers seeking gritty, nuanced stories that reflect India’s socio-political complexities. The latest addition to this lineup, Mayasabha: Rise of the Titans, premiering on August 7, 2025, reaffirms this commitment.
SonyLIV’s breakthrough in this niche began with the success of Maharani (2021), starring Huma Qureshi as a rural woman unexpectedly thrust into the role of Bihar’s Chief Minister. The show’s exploration of power, caste politics, and corruption resonated strongly with audiences, leading to two equally successful follow-up seasons.
Other acclaimed titles like Scam 1992 and Rocket Boys have also explored political themes, further cementing the platform’s dedication to this space. Over the last four to five years, SonyLIV has consistently expanded its library with stories that engage with regional and national political narratives.
Jehanabad – Of Love & War (2023) is a prime example, blending socio-political conflict with a human story and gaining substantial popularity. Similarly, Freedom at Midnight offered a sweeping portrayal of India’s independence and partition, dramatizing the political decisions of key figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
Another standout, The Waking of a Nation, tackled the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, examining the political and social tensions surrounding the tragedy and its long-lasting impact.
In this context, Mayasabha represents SonyLIV’s latest effort to deepen its presence in the political thriller genre. Set in 1990s Andhra Pradesh and inspired by real events, the series follows the intense rivalry between Kakarla Krishnama Naidu and MS Rami Reddy, exploring themes of betrayal, ambition, and power.
Directed by Kiran Jay Kumar and Deva Katta, and featuring a star-studded cast including Aadhi Pinisetty and Chaitanya Rao, the show is rumoured to parallel the political rivalry between N. Chandrababu Naidu and Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.
Whether Mayasabha continues SonyLIV’s strong streak remains to be seen, but its ambition and thematic alignment certainly signal another bold step for the platform. Stay tuned for more updates.
