Dhanush’s much-anticipated crime drama Kuberaa is set to stream on Prime Video India from July 18, and the film will be a tricky game on OTT. The film also stars Nagarjuna and Rashmika Mandanna, and is directed by Sekhar Kammula. The story follows a beggar who rises to become a vigilante-like figure caught in the middle of a high-stakes political conspiracy. Nagarjuna plays a former CBI officer and Rashmika lends emotional weight in the film
The film had all the right ingredients to become a blockbuster with a big star cast, a skilled director, and intense subject matter. The performances were widely appreciated, especially Dhanush, who completely transformed for the role. Yet, despite the initial excitement, the film failed to make a big splash at the box office. While it managed to recover its cost through worldwide business, its performance in Tamil Nadu and the Hindi markets was underwhelming.
Now with its OTT release around the corner, Kuberaa has one last shot to redeem itself and find its audience. But it won’t be easy. There’s already very little hype around the digital release. And in today’s crowded streaming world, even good films disappear if they don’t get noticed.
If Prime Video doesn’t promote the film actively, it will likely get lost in the sea of weekly new releases. This isn’t just about numbers but about giving a well-made film its deserved chance. And Kuberaa absolutely needs that push right now.
